This may sound like a silly question, but I was hoping to get a photograph of my graduating senior in his cap and gown next May standing next to something that clearly says “Brown University” - as in an official university sign? I have not seen one anywhere on campus, that I can recall, which I find very odd, and my son is not aware of one either. Anyone have any knowledge of this? I am sure there must be one somewhere.
How about the Brown Bear on the campus green? Or by the gates? Mine is graduating then too and I hope to get a picture of her in front of the bear - as a companion to the one I took there at the end of ADOCH when she decided on Brown. I was at graduation/reunion a couple of years ago and there seemed to be a lot of pictures in front of the bear and I believe they leave the gates open so people can take pictures there.
Someone asked the same question about Harvard last year. One response was that the Ivy schools considered such signs undignified.
I can’t think of any such signs. The most typical spots for photos would be in front of one of the bear statues (one on the Main Green, one by the athletic center) or in front of the Van Wickle Gates.
Wayland Hall also has the crest over it’s arch
^On 2nd thought it might be covered by a sign they put up for reunion
There is a very large crest on the front of the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center:

^yeah, but that’s nowhere near as pretty as Wayland Arch. I was wrong, the sign does not cover the crest: http://advancement.brown.edu/googlesites/classes/1987/images/img24.jpg
Just noticed that the linked photo appears to have the date 5/24/02 on it. Amazing.
@iwannabe_Brown, I chuckle at your wayland comment, as my daughters window was next to the arch (2nd floor) last year, and it was a lively location to put it mildly.
@omgBrown I too lived in one of the arch rooms freshman year. Bought a megaphone and my unit-mates and I had a lot of fun heckling passersby at night from my room with the lights off.
At the commencement march, there is a banner that will say Brown 2018 (search Google images for “Brown commencement 2017” and you’ll see what I mean). Get to commencement really really early with your kid and find the front of the line and see if the banner is there, or try to locate it at the end. The banner is held by students at the front of the graduates as they march down the hill.
@omgBrown - My DD’s freshman room also was on the 2nd floor right next to the arch! A nice sized double and definitely a lively location! But she loved living in Wayland - it was the perfect fit for her. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to get a picture of her under the arch at commencement.
Maybe you can buy a pennant at the Bookstore or something like that and hold it for your photo.
Thank you to everyone for their advice/comments. I guess I will just have to look for the banner that @fireandrain mentioned. Had to laugh at @bonenz’s comment. Still think it is very strange (ridiculous?) that no sign exists for a university with such a history (no university sign even back to 1761?) Still wonder if there is one in storage somewhere, and if there is, it seems it should be on display somewhere. Can just picture us waving a pennant behind my son that we have to purchase at the bookstore! So funny.
