Just wondering if anyone has received a call regarding the waitlist?

I was told they were over-enrolled. :(

What does it mean? Do they kick out admitted students when they’re over-enrolled?

All colleges have a class goal number when they admit students. They admit a number of students that, when they estimate the yield (per cent of admitees who accept the offer of admittance), come up with the goal number.

When more students accept than anticipated, no admission offers are recinded.

There may be a housing crunch…doubles made into triples, etc. For example, in her first year, my daughter had a double in Torrey. That room has been a single ever since. Looking back, it was probable the result of just this situation. The good news is that Mount Holyoke’s dorms have large rooms and they are quite livable with more than the “ideal” number of students in a room.

This type of thing happens everywhere. My older daughter went to a large state school. Her first room was a lounge converted to a triple. Three very small portable closets, 3 drawers on wheels and 3 beds. She and her roomates had a great time, despite the cramped quarters.

At Mount Holyoke, my daughter had all regular furniture and a full closet, just not the spacious room she had hoped for. However, the room was as big as many rooms we saw when visiting other colleges. It all worked out fine!

Thank you very much icesk8mom! I’m from Germany and not used to the American college system. But it’s great that so many girls decided for MoHo!

You are most welcome! It’s lovely that you have the opportunity to experience the US in general and Mount Holyoke in particular. I wish you all the best!

I hear from my firstie D from the dorm lottery of 2 weeks ago or so that not as many juniors are studying abroad next year, likely due to the bad exchange rate and the economy, so there will be a greater percentage of juniors on campus next year than usual, all needing a place to live.

Hey girlies!

Any idea when the wait list result for 2011 comes out?

I was told they were going to have a housing crunch (less dorms than students). I think they had one a few years ago and people were doubled and tripled up.

My (now former) fistie, back from MHC already, tells me that there were more acceptances than expected this year. So, don’t hold you breath to move from the waitlist to an acceptee. Sorry.

More acceptances than usual? Oh man That’s heart breaking to hear. I’ve already declined acceptances from Macalester and Ohio. I really really want to go to MHC.

What are your other options, ShirelyH? You should have accepted somewhere and stayed on the MHC wait list. If you do hear from MHC, you could always then go there instead of where you deposited for enrollment. That IS allowed.

True but I was really hopeful of getting in. I had the grades, excessive extra curricular activities, excellent transcripts, a good essay (I made my teacher read it), and I’m sure good recommendations too. A couple of students who got into MHC from my school didn’t have all this. The only difference was that they hadn’t ask for financial aid. I worked very hard all my life because my mum worked at two places from 8 am till 10 pm to get all of us a decent education (my dad’s unemployed). We were all so hopeful and I really hope I’m wrong to think that at the end it’s only the well-to-do who can achieve a good education because if this is true then this realization will hurt A LOT and shatter the faith it took years for me to cultivate.
I declined offers from Macalester and Ohio. The only option I have left is LUMS(a local uni). I’d be more than happy top go to MHC in the spring session if they offer me this chance.

Please don’t feel badly, ShirelyH. My D had great grades, ec’s, SAT’s etc, and I graduated from MHC, so, as an alum, I thought my talented D would have a great shot as a legacy! She still got wait listed. It was just a very, very competitive year. Our problem is that we live close to the college, and they do have limits on the number of local students from local towns they will accept, so I think that is what hurt her. Oh well, in her opinion, South Hadley is boring, and too close to home. She has found a college she really likes, was accepted, offered fantastic aid to make it affordable for us, and she is excited and ready to start her future. Did you take a look at the NACAC list to see if there is maybe a school with aid to offer that you could like? You might find a hidden gem. Good luck.

Thank you so much. You’re really sweet teachandmom I didn’t check NACAC list but my high school counselor gave all of a list of colleges that do give aid and all and that’s how I chose where to apply. Btw, honestly speaking, do you think people have a chance lets say maybe 30% of getting off the wait list?

@ShirleyH: I have been waitlisted by MoHo and three other colleges last year. I think I would go crazy if I experienced it this year again. But the point is, since Mt Holyoke was my first choice I decided to take a gap year improve all of my stats and apply again. So I did that, I applied ED2 and got into MoHo this year. I bettered my SAT, essays, got into few very interesting activities during gap year and the college said yes. BTW I needed significant financial aid to attend and they provided it for me. So don’t lose your hope. The truth is if you need fin aid it will get harder at any institution but if you really want MoHo and you are determined about it nothing can stop you, believe me.

ShirleyH, since I read that MHC is over-enrolled, it doesn’t look like the wait list will be touched, unless “summer melt” occurs. I think looking at other schools that still have seats and aid would be your best bet if you want to go to school this year, otherwise, a gap year does sound like your best option if you do something really tremendous with it. It couldn’t hurt to see what the schools on the NACAC list might be able to offer. If you don’t like the aid they can give, then the gap year would be your next option. You never know until you try!

Thank you jezda3. I hope that’s true. I’ll reapply next year if they don’t take me. I just really hope they do, even if its the spring session. I’m still confused if I should take a gap year or go to LUMS and tryna get a transfer… Please pray for me? Holyoke is so beautiful. Aren’t you lovin’ it?

Teachandmom, yes I’ll try and see NACAC. But I really really hope they somehow take your D and me. God’s benevolent, you never know.

ShirleyH, I’ve been through the process and I can imagine how you feel. I was waitlisted by Reed, Grinnell, MoHo and Wash U in St Louis. None of them took me, and it was late July or beginning of August when Holyoke let me know that they are closing the list. I don’t want to sound cruel (because just like in the admissions process you never know) but the wait is long and tedious and usually does not result in acceptance. I agree completely with teachandmom - it just depends which option you are more comfortable with. Right at the moment NACAC list is the way to go, at least to explore different options and you never know, you might stumble upon a pot of gold.

If you do decide on a gap year try to figure out what was the weakest link in your application, whether it’s the tests, essays, recs or activities. Even if everything was great maybe you haven’t presented it in the right way. And maybe everything was right and great but this was a tough year to compete in. If you do the gap year and you’re certain about MoHo ED is the way to go. Not sure where you live but try also to get an interview with alum or admission rep. Gap year is very challenging and it can be tough from time to time but if you are ready to do it you’ll know inside and you’ll know that sacrifices are worth it.

I am not sure about transfer admission, at the time when I was making a decision it looked like I had a better chance of admission as a first year than as a transfer. This again should be your personal decision and whatever you do try not having regrets about it ;)

Yes jezda3! You made me feel so much better, thank you so so much
I love how you can empathize with me. Right now, I’m going through NACAC list (thank you teachandmom for guiding me).
I hope I do stumble over a pot of gold Otherwise I think I’ll go to LUMS. And maybe reapply next year or something. I’m not so happy with taking a gap year so I’ll go to LUMS then or maybe if fate’s on my side, MHC or some college off NACAC. Please pray for me. Much love :)
