Laundry list of well, honestly, clubs I was not very dedicated to

I want to go in as an IPE/German major.
I would love to go to Fordham, but $$$ will be my obstacle!

Welcome South Carolina! We need more southerners at Fordham! I sincerely hope you get in, and moreover, that once accepted…you come to the April orientation for newly admitted students and commit to attend Fordham. Its an awesome school…a true hidden diamond. If you need money, then I strongly suggest you apply for financial aid, and do so early in the process. I dont speak for admissions, but your stats look fine to me.

There are many great linguists at Fordham and the Department of Foreign Languages has some awesome professors. Be prepared to work harder than you have ever worked in your life. Fordham is not for the weak kneed or ill prepared. Its for serious academically oriented students. They work reallya hard, but also play hard. Its a super atmosphere. And the FOOD is great at the many school cafeterias and restaurants on campus. The dorms are wonderful with many different living environments. I heartily recommend Queens Court Residential College, if you come.

Admissions will be even MORE competitive this year than last year. So I really hope you get in. We are so glad our kid decided on Fordham (and turned down other offers). There are some very, very, very smart kids running around Fordham. Believe me! You will be challenged to your limits, but not overwhelmed. You will do a LOT of reading and a LOT of writing of papers. That is a good thing. Fordham graduates come out ready to take on the world!

And bring your friends from South Carolina! Good luck to you!

Wow thank you so much!! It’s so nice of you to say that! Are you from South Carolina as well?
I’ve never been to New York City except for a few hours (and jammed in traffic!) but I am a city person and confident I’ll love it! If I get in and get decent money I plan to visit in the spring.

I found out this morning I got a 34 on my ACT. Does that qualify me for scholarship money along with my other stats?

I’m definitely ready for a challenge  Fordham seems like it would be a great fit for me!

I applied…
SAT 2320
Sat II: Lit 760, Math I 740, US History 690, Global History 690, Bio E 690
GPA: 4.0, Rank 2/141 –>Honors/Accelerated/AP Classes
ECS: Government Internships, President of 2 clubs, StuCouncil Exec.board officer, etc…

Great stats BOTH of you, South Carolina and want2bIvy.

First and foremost, congratulations on your hard work. Second, congratulations on your decision to apply to Fordham University. I can tell you that it is a life changing event in your lives to pick a college. Make the best of it! Picking the right college…one that fits your personality and ambitions is extremely important. Of course there is a lot of diversity, particularly at Fordham, but each college has a unique culture and “feel” and its important you fit in there…I remember being on a campus at a VERY prestigious college in the midwest. Its an amazing college. Incredible programs and superb faculty. But the overall feel of the campus was a bit frenetic. Kids triple majoring and talking real fast. That is NOT what Fordham is. Fordham is a very strong academic school. You will work extremely hard. The Jesuit influence is a wonderful thing…not oppressive or overbearing. My kid is very, very challenged…not overwhelmed and frenetic. But working extremely hard. There is some grade deflation at Fordham. Its not a place that gives out “A’s” to everyone who walks in the door and attends class. You have to earn it and “A’s” are only given for extraordinary academic performance. But you will learn a great deal…both in class and outside of class. Fr. McShane, S.J., the school President is an amazing man…very charismatic and full of energy. He is visionary and will take Fordham to new lofty levels. Its a school on the march.

Dont believe that Princeton Review stuff. The food is actually very good, lots of variety and actually sort of fun…different venues. The school spirit is extremely strong! There is a great deal of Fordham Pride, I can tell you that. Fordham students are known for academic rigor, but also their integrity and character.

A lot of kids with super stats think that because they have a superb SAT or ACT score they MUST go to an Ivy or super elite school. Not so. While some may choose to do that, you may well be happier at a place like Fordham. Its a very special place indeed. My kid is extremely happy there and would NOT consider transferring anywhere. Period.

As for money from Fordham, I obviously dont speak for them. You will be considered automatically upon application for any merit scholarships. But I would also consider applying for financial aid. You may get a balance of aid in various forms. The applicant pool is getting very very competitive. The SAT and ACT scores are rising rapidly, so getting merit aid is for the top applicants generally. I think the average merit scholarship recipient had a CR and Math SAT combined score above 1400 (and 2100 overall) last year. There may be exceptions for various reasons and recruiting goals.

It doesnt hand out money like Halloween candy, but generally kids who go there get the aid they need in one form or another. The student body is generally middle to upper middle class, but there are people there who require a lot of financial aid. The kids who go there are well behaved generally. Many come from prestigious private schools with long records of producing top scholars and kids with integrity and character. My kid was a mix of public and private school education, but fits in extremely well and has made a LOT of new friends. Fordham students are very, very tight. They stick up for each other and go into the city together in large groups to dine out, see a show or sporting event.

Fordham is actively recruiting top students. There is a boy in my kid’s dorm who comes from Omaha who scored a perfect 2400 on the SAT last year. A very nice boy, extremely well mannered, and obviously very smart.

Does Fordham have its share of rowdies? Yes. All colleges have them. Including Princeton, Harvard and Yale.

But they dont last long if they misbehave and get caught or if they let their studies go.

Fordham knows that kids stay up late and study and write papers, so many classes are scheduled late morning and into the late afternoon. Many kids have at least one day off mid week with no classes at all. But because they all take 5 classes (and then a lab), they are plenty busy through the week and use that day off to catch up on reading, writing papers…often while they do their laundry in the dorm. Laundry is free of charge, by the way. But you must do your own laundry. There is a dorm laundry service you can pay for that is an outside company, but I dont know how many use it.

Looking at your stats, it looks like both of you will indeed be admitted…but of course, I am do not represent the school or work for them and they make their own decisions. As you well know, college admissions are often very quirky and even kids with super stats get put on lists or rejected…often for arcane or seemingly capricious reasons. It happened to my kid at another school. It happens a lot. So say a prayer, cross your fingers…but from here…it looks great to me.

And South Carolina,…no I am not a South Carolinian…but I am a Southerner.

It would be SUPER to have you at Fordham next year! And want2bIVy…you have stellar stats and I think you would be a superb fit at Fordham and do very well there and be very happy. Remember when you are making your decision about schools…to VISIT the campus and get your feel…and ask yourself, “Where will I be the happiest and do the best?” “Where do I fit the best?” You both will obviously have more than one school to choose from come April of 08. Congrats. But GO TO THE FORDHAM ORIENTATION FOR ADMITTED STUDENTS. We did. It was a terrible day due to the weather. And if we could still see Fordham shine through all that awful wind and rain (a freak storm), then you probably will also. And I can tell you that we did NOT make the wrong decision. Its a gorgeous campus (Rose Hill-Bronx). You dont see many (if any) unhappy faces at Fordham. The kids we talked to last April represented to us what Fordham was like (as did Fr. McShane…whom I spoke to PERSONALLY for a long time) and it is precisely as represented. My kid is extremely happy at Fordham and you will be too!

Good luck and God Bless.

I applied Early Action with the Your Choice app.

GPA: 94
SAT: 1230/1850
ACT: 29
AP: English Lang, US History, Environmental Science, English Lit
EC’s: Varsity cheerleading
Volunteer at a local hospital
Bible Camp counselor
Little Leage coach

Your stats, while good, are pretty much the median at Fordham. I would say you have a very good chance at getting in, especially if you had a good essay. However, I don’t think you will get much in merit aid. Good luck.

I applied EA. My brother goes to Fordham and loves it… it would be pretty awesome to get in anyway. As for stats, 93.5 gpa, sat: 2100, 5 on ap english language, and I guess a hook is having quite a strong visual arts portfolio, editor of school academic journal and school literary arts magazine, senior courses: ap physics, ap studio art, ap latin literature, precalculus, ap literature, western philosophy.

Does anyone know if the philosophy program at Fordham has an emphasis on Catholic philosophy or Christian ethics? Or if the freshman philosophy classes focus on Christian morality? The religious aspect worries me a little bit, but from what I’ve heard its not extremely prevalent.

Also, does anyone know much about the visual arts major, or how hard it would be to double major in art and philosophy or literature?

What about the advanced standing in Fordham law school after junior year? Is that an extremely small program? I imagine it’s very competitive, but does anyone know how many students they usually allow into it?

My d is in a freshman philosophy seminar and loves it- it isn’t “focused” on the christian philosophers or anything like that, its a hard class, but she may minor in philosophy and hasn’t changed her mind yet, so…

What kind of people actually get the full-rides? I know it’s the top 20, but are they pretty much all 1560+, 4.5+ students? I’m curious to know who usually gets this.
