Anyone else from cali going here?

I am in lecture and i am sooooo booooooorrrrreeeeeedddd.

At least I’m not asleep like the two athletes next to me.

Ha, what are you taking? My classes are pretty interesting this quarter and I have fun teachers. Of course, a few people are snoozing in every class … >_> …

ok i got my packet today and it says pre-engineering. does that mean i am not a direct admit?

CSE hasn’t made decisions yet on direct admit, so I don’t know.

maybe

still waiting on Cal or USC

I got my welcome packet today for pre-science of course. Hopefully, that will change next week :smiley: I’m going to visit UW next week and go to one of the classes for CS as well as take a tour of the campus. I’m not sure what to expect, but hopefully, I like what I see.

I was accepted March 15 and received my packet today.

caliskimmer: Are you planning on going to one of the Intro CS courses? You should think about dropping by the intro web programming course (awesome awesome teacher) as well. PM me if you want more specific info.

Are you talking about CSE 190 by any chance? That’s what I’m visiting and the course description says web programming.

Yeah, CSE 190m! I took it last Spring and it was wonderful :3

speedsolver: did you go into CS already knowing a lot about it? The only real exposure i have right now to CS is the college level discrete class i am currently taking. And a summer internship where i helped design website using html/java codes. I’m scared that everyone else going into CS has had a lot of prior experience such as taught themselves programming C++ or something…I have none of that. lol and honestly, I am not 100% sure what to expect in the CS major in college.

I took AP Comp Sci in high school (independent study). Some people come in with multiple internships under their belt … A LOT of people have never programmed before and don’t know the difference between javascript and java. You’re already further ahead than the pack.

I knew loops and what inheritance was and stuff… nothing impressive. I could have skipped CSE 142 with my AP credit, but I retook it because I didn’t feel like my foundations were stable.

@speedsolver: Now I’m really excited!

qq1994: Hehe, about that…I self-taught myself Java, Objective-C, C, and C++ while learning Python and refining my Java skills in two classes at my school. I’ve also taken a look at popular pathfinding algorithms and have built a game along with multiple IT tools for my teacher. :D

But honestly, with time and motivation, you can be up to pace pretty quickly. The key word is definitely motivation, and as long as you have that, I don’t think you need to worry about anything (unless if college classes are über-hardcore in which case, I couldn’t help you). Unlike you, though, I have never had an internship like that so you definitely beat me there! Also, if you have demonstrated strong math skills in high school, you will probably have a better chance at direct admit than I do because I have nothing stellar to show in terms of math.

To address your last statement, if you love problem-solving and/or math, you will most likely love the major.

caliskimmer is absolutely right.

I actually was planning on going pre-med while I was still in high school. If I knew I was going to ultimately go cs, I would invest so much more time in that (instead of medical internships and the like). I would be a doctor who can develop my own tools in the office (or work on open source integration projects for medical offices, etc).

I wish I knew that I ultimately wanted to go into industry when I was in high school. My time would be spent nailing down data structures, doing personal projects, and perhaps even intern somewhere. I envy you guys. ;)

@ caliskimmer and speedsolver, thanks guys. yes math is definitely a strong point in my standardized tests/grades. i love math <3 haha

@caliskimmer, good luck in getting direct admit!

@qq1994: You too! ;)

@speedsolver: it was SIS 201, but I decided to drop it. I was exploring adding the minor to my program, but it actually makes more sense to do a NELC minor instead. Since the distribution credits are fungible I’m like 2 classes from a minor anyway.

I’m from norcal and going to UW!! (: bay area

im from bay area too!! :D

My son just got accepted to biomed engineering there. I don’t know. Only 54% gratuate in 4 years. Total cost for non-res is what 41K year? Maybe UCD better choice for NCAL kid?

NCAL Dad.
