Obviously GU’s finaid wasn’t so “terrible” that your friend turned it down.

But more to the point, how do you really know? Have you seen your friend’s Profile? Did the friend get accepted to other similar, need-only schools with much better finaid to be used for comparisons? For example, was friend accepted at say Emory with no merit money, need-based only? Or Wake Forest, or Tufts? Without a comparable, is it fair to diss GU?

Yes, GU does not have the same need-based packages as HYPS – but NO OTHER college does either.

I got accepted today and received $0 in financial aid. AKA, I won’t be able to go because there is no way my family can afford $53,000 a year.

In regards to hudsonvalley51 and “If you are a “full pay” family who can’t afford a $55,000 per year education why would you apply to schools that only offer need-based aid?,” I was under the impression that every student should be able to apply to the college that they want. You seem to state that it’s our fault and that we should be denied the chance to attend just because we are slightly better off than some others. Still can’t afford it.

But anyways, does anyone know if there is a chance to receive financial aid if you call and speak to the financial aid office?

D was accepted via letter yesterday. There was also a separate envelope with the Fin aid packageenclosed. The fin aid was not so bad, it totaled about $21M which included combination of Sub direct loans, scholarships and work study. We are very pleased with the package considering what we have read on this thread… Hoping to attend one of the accepted student days in April.
I hear the school is beautiful!!

My FA letter said that I got a $4700 scholarship from GU. Is this like a grant, or was it awarded to me for some reason? Not to belittle myself, but I don’t know how I could get a scholarship over some of the other applicants to GU, especially considering my family income is >150 k.

I was so excited to get into Georgetown until I opened my FA. My family got nowhere near what I feel we should have qualified for. I would love to attend Georgetown, but I would have to take out so much money in student loans. What a bummer :(

@hasnoidea: My mother physically showed up at the Georgetown FA office last week during GAAP weekend – alas to no avail :-(! I would say it was worth a shot, as we’re glad to say we tried, but I wouldn’t have the highest of expectations!

When we went to tour Georgetown, I tried to tip the taxi driver. He told me to keep my tip because I would need it if DD went there–she decided to go elsewhere…

Georgetown tries to meet the “full demonstrated need” of the student, so yes, I think your FAFSA result does have a major impact on the amount of aid you receive.

And yes, they offered me a loan for 3k, work study for 3k, and covered the rest with a $46k scholarship.

All of you guys are saying what terrible aid (if you even got aid!) you got. Can someone speak up who has had some aid? If you don’t mind sharing that and an estimate of your family’s income?

My EFC is 00000. I got the following scholarship for a “full ride”:

Federal Pell Grant - $5550
President’s DC Scholarship - $6000
Georgetown Scholarship - $45510

Then I was informed my family is expected to pay 564 dollars, but I still have a 2,500 state grant I didn’t register with Georgetown yet. So that will take care of that 564. But Georgetown likes to deduct their scholarship when you receive other scholarships to balance it out. No way to get extra money in your pocket. If so then I would like to know.

retired single parent with ~$60,000 income, and typical assets, although most of the money goes towards retirement fund and medical bills. $9,000 aid, $6,000 of it is loans and $3,000 of it is grants/work study. Super disappointed, Georgetown doesn’t seem to consider to special circumstances that my father is no longer able to get a job due to health problems! Definitely not attending this fall unless we appeal it :(

Caliemi16 - you should definitely try to appeal ! I feel for you, as I am in a similar situation, with my single mother being constantly out of work and on disability. We’re making less than $60,000, too, and I received a lot of aid.

$5, 550 pell grant
$45, 920 scholarship
$3, 000 loan
$3, 000 work study
only paying $590 out of pocket.

Hi guys,
I was accepted EA to McDonough and I haven’t received any notification of FA yet. How do you guys find out your aid – email or mail or call? And when did Gtown send the package?
I just want to go to this school so bad.
Thanks
