Basically, this year, I applied to eleven colleges...got into 6, rejected from one (Yale), anddddd...waitlisted at the other four. A lot of my classmates also got waitlisted at four or five schools. I'm not terribly upset because I did get into two of my top choices, but it's still a lack of closure. Plus I'm wavering on how much I like the schools where I was waitlisted.

So basically, I know the whole official spiel about waitlists that they send you with the letter, but what's the real deal? Do I have a legitimate chance of getting in or is it just a courtesy? How much interest should I show if I do want to be taken off? Will sending the letter now or later (after I've revisited my top acceptances) make a difference in a potential acceptance? Is it worth visiting campus again or pullng any strings possible? Has anyone here been accepted off a waitlist? How do you cancel your deposit if you do get accepted?

Also, I just want to commiserate with anyone else who is stuck in this situation. It sort of blows. Is it just me or are they using waitlists MUCH more than they used to?
