Anyone else not excited about doing the college move in the middle of a hurricane?

We need to drive our son to North Carolina from Philly area. Original plan was drive down Sat., move him in, stay overnight, drive back Sunday. Now we’re leaving this evening, probably spending the night somewhere in south/central VA (btw, has there ever been an earthquake in the midst of a hurricane, HA!) . Get up early tomorrow, drive the rest of the way, move him in, and drive home.

Figure we’ll beat the weather this way. I’m most worried about traffic. Heard Outer Banks has already ordered evacuation of tourists, plus there’s Virginia Beach, all the Maryland and Delaware beaches pouring back into DC/Balt. Can’t wait!

School has emailed that they will be flexible with early or late move ins due to the weather. We had planned to go a day early anyway, so will hope to get her stuff in on Saturday before the big rain starts.

I just moved my D into her DC dorm on Tuesday. We definitely felt the earthquake and they decided to evacuate the dorm while we were in the midst of move in. My D is on crutches with a broken ankle and they turned off the elevators for the evacuation. I was outside with my son and a huge load ready to take to her room, she was inside and had to use the stairs down. I just asked her if she has heard anything about the hurricane, and she said “not yet.” Hopefully, she won’t have to evacuate again~!!

We need to get our son to Maine on Monday and so far the AESOP trips (his is a sailing trip up the Maine coast!) are going off as scheduled, Tuesday. This means we have to drive up in hurricane conditions and move him in during hurricane conditions on Monday. If I don’t feel it’s a safe thing to do, regardless of what the school says, we won’t be driving in it. Can’t even go early as DH is a dep. director at NY Homeland Security and Emergency Management and when he left this morning he told me he had no idea when he would be home.

So dreading this weekend.

Just got the following information:

“This is an important message to students in NYU Student Housing. We were looking forward to greeting many of you — and new students in particular — this coming Sunday, Aug 28. However, because of the predicted arrival of Hurricane Irene in New York City on Sunday, Aug 28, NYU has changed Move-In Day to Monday, Aug 29; while we regret that this may cause some inconvenience, we believe this is the course that will best ensure your safety. Students will not be allowed to move in before Monday, and should make appropriate adjustments in their travel schedules; services usually provided to students beginning Sunday will not start until Monday.
It is important that you monitor your email accounts for additional messages, including possible changes that may occur because of conditions, and re-scheduling of previously scheduled activities and events. If there is some extraordinary set of circumstances of which we should be aware, you may contact the Student Housing office at xxx xxx-xxxx. Please be aware, however, that we are predisposed not to make exceptions. In addition, events that were scheduled for Sunday are canceled. We look forward to seeing you on Monday, Aug 29 instead of Sunday. There will be follow-up emails about rescheduled activities.

We thank you for your understanding and forbearance. Be well, and travel safely."

I would agree with the advice of coming later instead of earlier…if possible. If the colleges lose power, or there is significant damage…there won’t be classes anyway. If you have the option of moving in later in the day on Monday…personally I’d take that option.

Wow, I don’t envy this group. I, for one, am looking forward to a pleasantly non-eventful move-in at the University of Michigan for our freshman son next Wednesday.

Godspeed to all of you!

Some colleges in Connecticut are beginning to adjust move-in dates

From the Chronicle of Higher Ed:

Our U (Adelphi on Long Island) also just changed Move-In/Matriculation from Sun/Mon to Mon/Tues. Luckily I could get one more night at the hotel, and we were going to be on vacation all week anyway. We’re driving out tomorrow, so travel should be fine on either end. It’s just disappointing to D that everything is different, and adds expense for us. Ah, well. I wasn’t looking forward to moving stuff in heavy rain and winds. Hopefully things will be as they expect!

Good luck to those where this is much more complicated to deal with. It sure is making this experience more stressful.

Emmybet, glad to here you’ve been postponed. One less person I have to fret about this weekend. DH said he is sending his team tomorrow instead of Saturday and ambulances were sent today to pre-position. NYC and LI are going to be a mess.

Expected landfall in NY is 5am Sat. morning according to reports he’s been getting.

^^ emilybee, he’s hearing 5 AM Saturday, not Sunday?

I’m trying to talk DH and S1 out of driving from NYC to Baltimore on Saturday (driving down in the AM, with DH driving back in the afternoon), but they keep telling me I shouldn’t worry because Irene is not due to hit DC and NY until Sunday morning. They think it will be far enough south on Saturday that they will be safe.

Eek - I hope you meant Sunday morning. NWS has Saturday only a bit rainy, and we have matinee theatre tickets!!

It’s crazy that Saturday is supposed to be very normal and Monday is supposed to be “nice.” I do appreciate the way Adelphi has scheduled things to allow for a full-campus check after the storm before they let people move in.

I also heard SUNDAY morning…would like to know as a friend is driving here SATURDAY instead of Sunday.

Sorry, just rechecked his text and he said Sun morning My bad. I didn’t mean to cause undue fretting.

^^^ Glad to hear! Thanks for rechecking, emilybee.

You don’t necessarily want to get to your schools early. Your student may be out of luck when the powers that be close the school and require the students to have their own " personal evacuation plan ". William and Mary is closing the school and dorms tomorrow at noon. Christopher Newport is as well. According to someone in western Massachusetts, several schools ate closing there too and requiring students to evacuate.

I will say…there are forecasts for scattered showers/thunderstorms here (CT) on Saturday so it’s not going to be a crisp clear New England day either. BUT better than Sunday…or so it seems now.

Thumper, yes. The 5am is landfall, the outer bands will be in advance of that.
