Hurricane Sandy-- classes cancelled

So, school is cancelled for D from Mon-Wed. She could take a bus home tomorrow-- (we are in the storm area too, so who knows what will happen here.) Maybe she should come home, maybe she should stay--wish I knew. Anyone else dealing with cancellations?

Lots of schools will be modifying/ cancelling things. Good luck to all. Identifying schools would seem to be helpful.

W&M classes are definitively cancelled on Monday, and Tuesday isn’t looking good either. I’m not going home, if only because I live even more directly in the path of the storm. The odds that the campus will lose electricity for more than a few days are low, whereas I live in the boonies. When we have a major hurricane, our average time to get power back is two weeks. >.>

Honestly, if I thought I could anything from going home, then I would. But it doesn’t work that way for me.

Gwen, D3 showed up at home this evening after originally thinking about staying at school. We’re in the path of the storm also, but I guess she decided that it might be nice to have someone else in charge of worrying about stuff. I’m glad the school gave enough notice about the cancellation…unlike where I work, which will probably wait until several people have risked their lives trying to get into work next week.

Coincidentally, her sister (Bard '12) is home this weekend (which may have impacted her sister’s decision) on her way to an event. I’m trying to convince her to sit out the storm at home, missing work on Monday and maybe Tuesday, especially since I’m guessing NY public transit will be at a standstill.

University of Delaware has cancelled classes on Monday and Tuesday. It will be no better here on Ling Island. DD stayed at school as did many of friends. If she came home, who knows when she could get back and how.

No word from S or from the school’s alert system regarding any cancelations next week. S usually calls on Sunday evening so we might hear something tomorrow. He is in DC so they will get some part of the storm.

Interesting - in NJ, it seems the majority of the private colleges are cancelling classes for Monday and Tuesday. These include Drew, Seton Hall, Rider, College of St. Elizabeth, Centenary, Caldwell, Monmouth. Princeton is apparently on fall break for this next week.

The statement for several of the northern publics I checked just say that as of now, they are operating normally, but they explain how to access future statements. Rowan and Stockton have cancelled for Monday and Tuesday.

Smart to cancel classes in advance, which allows wtudents to leave in advance of the storm, and have time to return. When Isaac hit New Orleans in Sept, they cancelled classes for Tue-Weds, but the storm stalled and sat there and they ended up cancelling classes for the rest of the week due to continued power outages, etc. So for those getting out of harms way (which, given the size of the storm, may require going to the othe coast!!) it is smart to leave early and wait 'til its safe to travel again. Would expect most schools would be more than accomodating about this.

In Philly, La Salle University! Philadelphia University, and Penn have cancelled classes for Mon and Tues. Temple and Drexel haven’t announced closures yet.

Also in the Phil area: Villanova and St. Joe’s have cancelled for Mon/Tues, but Bryn Mawr and Haverford are holding out. It was suggested that more local Villanova students head home but most would be going into more dangerous storm areas. S2 says most are staying and stocking up on food and drink supplies. They’ve been told to expect campus-wide power outages and water damage.

My neice is at Washington College on the Eastern Shore. They are cancelled Monday-Tuesday. My brother (lives in the SW Philly suburbs) went to fetch her last night.

In the DC Metro area University of Maryland College Park, University of the District of Colombia, Johns Hopkins, George Mason, George Washington University, Towson, & Mary Washington will all be closed Monday.

Looks like all of the colleges in CT are closed at least Monday…most Monday and Tuesday.

Sons from DC just texted…AU has cancelled classes for Monday so far. It’s not just keeping the students safe…how are faculty and staff to get to campus/take care of their own families.

Also, the DC Metro and bus lines are stopping service at midnight tonight.

Columbia and Barnard have cancelled classes for Monday so far. That was when my D decided maybe her mom’s advice to stock up on nonperishables and water was a good idea. There wasn’t a lot left when she got there and she said it was a zoo at the supermarket. She did get a few rations… water, apple cider, Nutella and crackers. She has 3 mini loaves of zucchini bread in her freezer from an earlier care package. They have announced limited food service with serving times by floor/dorm. Some staff are housed in lounges in the dorms for the duration but many will not be able to get to campus.

I have a friend in Delaware who has lost power already.

Swarthmore has cancelled Monday and Tuesday.

The last time the DC metrobus/metrorail system closed was in 2003 during hurricane Isabel. The MARC in Maryland, and VRE in Virginia are also closed.

Catholic University, Galludet, & Howard University are also closed.

Any idea if Harvard and Harvard Med School are closed or under evacuation? Thanks!

Boston University has cancelled Monday classes.

"Northeastern University will be closed and all classes will be canceled on Monday, October 29th. This decision is to ensure the safety of those who need to commute to campus – faculty, staff, and some students. It is also consistent with the recommendation of the Governor of Massachusetts.

We are closely monitoring the developments around this storm and will continue to update the university community as necessary via email and Twitter (@northeastern).

All updates are posted on the Emergency Information website at [Emergency Information](Emergency Information - Northeastern University). "
