My D has completed most of her applications and submitted several reaches as well. She is down to the wire now and was only planning on doing one by the Jan. 15 deadline. Two schools reached out to her (one she visited and interviewed) in the last 2 days encouraging her to apply.
Is this common practice if they think you have a good chance of getting in or just a way to increase their application numbers?
She submitted the one she is most interested last night and now has decided to apply to one of the others that reached out but she hasn’t visited it due to distance. The one she visited and interviewed she decided not to apply. Does she need to follow up with the student interviewer to explain why she didn’t apply?
Who else has kids still finishing up applications today? Please, I hope I’m not the ONLY one lol!
Is she interested in the two schools? Are they financially viable? Why did they come off her list? If she is still interested and thinks she might attend, she can submit. If she has no interest, why waste the application fee. There must have been a reason she took if off her list.
In our experience, many schools send out “last chance to apply” emails/mailers just before their deadlines. The only times we’ve ever looked at college mailers as being specifically interested in our D rather than just a general outreach, are the 2 cases when schools offered her a fee waiver for applying (which we know is not usual for these 2). If someone actually called your daughter to remind her - then I’d take it as a good sign, otherwise i’d assume it’s just a general mail to everyone on their list.
My S is still getting inundated with these mailers. He’s had his list pretty much set for months. I think this is common practice for schools.
I don’t think it’s necessary to contact the interviewer.
And yes, he still has one application left to finish. It’s a school he was very interested in months ago, but then not so much so he didn’t visit. The fee is minimal so he’s going to apply and then if accepted decide whether or not to visit, depending on cost.
Trust me, your kid isn’t the only one waiting until the last day!
@SJ2727 We talked about the one she visited and took off the list (Lafayette). I too, wanted to know her rational. We visited on a weekday that just had snow so the admissions staff seemed unprepared. We were handed a map to do our own tour, there was a small information session with 4 students. The other prospective students were sports recruits and she was not but came from OOS.
She interviewed and said it went very well they were positive and impressed with her background and ECs. She told me the rep said Greek life was a large part of the school but were not treated differently if you didn’t join one. D1 athletes made another community within the school. D explained that neither of those things were important to her in a school and she felt it could be challenging to find her group of friends. She said even if she got in she didn’t think she’d like it as well as others she visited.
The second one, she decided to go ahead and apply since it has a free application and would strongly consider if she got accepted. A coach had emailed her in early Dec. to talk about running D3 for the school. When she started her college search, she was looking for best fit and academics for her but hadn’t considered running in college. She missed the window by not applying ED, so I don’t think coaches have much clout in RD.
The second email sent a few days ago was a follow up from December, indicated practice has started back and wanted to know if she was applying and they would let the admissions know that had been talking with her. She is going to apply here to see if she gets in and then will follow up with a visit to determine the best fit. She requested an interview because we are OOS and but hasn’t heard back. She is hoping to get accepted though because it offers a lot of what she is looking for in a school,
Its funny, we visited Lafayette and Lehigh on the same, rainy day.
With Lafayette, we had small tour sessions (1-2 families) and the tour guides made sure to keep us inside as much as possible while still showing us everything.
With Lehigh, there were liike 20 people tromping up the hills in the rain with the tour guide taking no heed that people at the back were not able to hear anything because of rain on umbrellas and being 50 feet behind.
@bopper we drove 8 hours so it was bummer it was a self-guided tour. I took D1 on a Lehigh tour when she was looking for colleges so I know exactly what you mean. With those hills it’s easy to get behind lol!
I thought both schools would be good options and we also have family in the area so it wouldn’t seem as scary going far away from home.
Now all her applications are it so we just need to wait and see where she gets in. It’s good to be finished this part of the process!
Years ago son finally did his flagship application in mid January- his acceptance came just a few weeks later with rolling admissions. Could tell he was not gung ho on others since one he got in online by the deadline California time, not local. Another he never did finish despite his dad’s exhortations to do so.
Now is the time to get those back up applications done.
@wis75 Yes she did get her in-state safety and acceptance for backup but prefers a smaller college. She was thrilled she got accepted to one reach that she applied EA just waiting on the FA and we want to compare acceptances on any others before deciding.
