anyone ever heeard of blackrock?

I am a senior from HS graduating this year...I was looking fowards to a relaxing summer but also kind of wanted an internship. I have a very good mentor that suggests the possibilty of working at blackrock this summer because he has a good friend there....I would probably have to live in NYC for the summer...worth it?

If you would spend about 30 minutes on google researching the asset management industry, you would find that BlackRock is one of the top 5 names in traditional asset management worldwide.

Even if you’re not in front office and you’re stuck doing something in back office / operations / marketing instead, it could be a very rewarding experience.

It would be worth being the coffee boy and shining shoes at Blackrock. 99% of the kids on this board would kill for that gig.

Agreed with naura and hmom, for a HS senior, that’s a very very good internship… esp. if you want to pursue financial services down the road… good resume booster…

Great if you can get it. Let us know.

BTW, my son’s roommate works at Blackrock but I doubt he could get anyone an internship at the firm unless it is through an official channel.

cbreeze, a senior person can do it with a 30 second phone call.

Yes, and then burden the underlings with taking care of (training?) him.
There has been severe layoffs at Blackrock.

I would be very impressed if you can get a legitimate internship at Blackrock before college

I am a high school senior looking for IB interns. Heck, I would staple pitch books, stand in Starbucks lines memorizing like 20 different ways to make a Macchiato; whatever for that name on my resume! Blackrock is in high regards. But honestly did you read what you wrote? Living in NYC for the summer… interning for Blackrock… worth it? worth it!? really? I don’t see what you’re giving up unless its a ‘relaxing summer’ with the Girls Next Door. Be ambitious and congrats for great networking!

I had a very bad experience but again this is my experience. I attended two recruiting events at my school. I flew to New York to attend a recruiting event at Blackrock. I had an interview with them and interviewer spent 5 minutes interviewing me , while other students were interviewed for 30-45 minutes . I come from an Arabic heritage…I sm very disappointed by their discrimination…

oh please…wow dont play the race card… sheese that’s just low.
If anything you are at an advantage not disadvantage as all companies try to diversify. so dont blame your race for your own problems
It is minorities like asians that get screwed… being minority but over represented in high achieving areas…

are you even aware of the caliber of students that intern there? And we are talking about top college students here. And you expected something as an HS student? come on. I bet you didn’t even know what you were getting into.

’ “Top college students” don’t look for internships at BlackRock – they end up at shops like Goldman, MS, and Blackstone. BlackRock is for people who couldn’t get into banking.'

This is not true. Many students who could get jobs at GS and MS would definitely prefer BlackRock. Of course, many at BlackRock would prefer GS or MS.

Edit: I don’t know how the post got messed up

Erm Yeah. you know. every top college student ended up at GS/MS this year…
um no.

^No, but Blackrock is asset management which, in the financial world, is considered the lowest in the food chain.

Other than bulge brackets, top college students would be looking at boutiques and PE firms over asset management.

Still a nice name to have on the resume of a high school student though

The number one employer of Brown graduates is Goldman, and yet, many of our students who could go there would also be interested in BlackRock. Does that mean that they would necessarily turn GS down? Of course not. But not every one of them would turn down BlackRock for Goldman either.

I know nothing about recruiting at the other schools mentioned.

As an anecdote, a few of my buddies at Wharton (which definitely fits the “top schools” description) have zero interest in working at a bank and want to go straight to asset management, it’s just a different mindset.

Why would you say your Arabic heritage was the factor in you not being admitted, and more so discriminated upon?

I am interested because I am Persian. From my knowledge, there are several Indian’s and a Persian’s that are in iBanking, trading, etc.
