Anyone ever successfully transferred from Cal to UCLA?

I seriously think i picked to wrong college (cal) and i want to transfer, but i'm undeclared (gonna be a freshman this fall) and i'm pretty sure I'd want to apply for one of the capped majors at UCLA, but I don't think I'd be able to get all the requirements done in time, even w/ summer school.
Was anyone in the same situation as me but made it to UCLA???

i wish i could switch position with ya

bama> I'm not sure if I totally understand your post. Are you saying that you want to transfer to UCLA as a junior?

Well, you're only a freshman, wait it out a bit and make sure this is what you want to do. Maybe the place will grow on you. :P

I'm not sure that it's possible until you are a junior, and even then, coming from another 4 year wolud be difficult.

Yeah, I'll bet you'll change your mind after the two years because you will have already settled in, made new friends, and gotten used to how things work around the school. If you transfer to UCLA, it's like you're starting all over again.

Calbear2009: correct. I don't think i'd be able to transfer after one year b/c i wouldn't have all of my course requirements done, though i will have all the units necessary.

emucla: are you a freshman? Why would you want cal over ucla??

wait... starting all over again?
isn't that what all the transfer students from CC are doing here anyway....
I mean sure were going to better universities and that's the purpose.
But if he feels that UCLA is a better place from him to be... then why wouldn't he want to transfer?

My point was that he hasn't even started at Berkeley yet, and he already wants to transfer. All I was saying is that he may not end up wanting to transfer after two years because he may actually like it there. Of course CC transfers are getting a fresh start because we're not actually at a university yet and have nowhere else to go but up. That should be a no brainer.

gobama,

You can apply as a junior transfer since you have the units, but it'd be highly unlikely that you would get into a capped major at UCLA.

I applied after a year at UCSC but got rejected from a capped major at UCLA. I did get into Cal and UCSD though.

But seriously, you should wait it out. Cal is a great place, at least to me.
The only reason I transferred was because UCSC wasn't my dream. and because of the awesomeness that Cal had to offer.

Orion8: it sounds like you're implying that only UCLA deals w/ capped majors as opposed to Berkeley? who gets into the capped majors then? oh. are you saying that transfers generally don't get into the capped majors, only the continuing freshmen do those? NO!! now what do i do?

i thought you had a fair chance of getting into a capped major if you did a lot of the pre-req's for it, which is why i thought i'd have to wait two years instead of one to transfer.

Many people get into capped majors. The only reason they're considered capped is because so many people apply to them and there simply isn't enough space. If you want an idea of what the admission rates are, you should check out this page: UCLA Undergrad Admissions: Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2008 The majors with the red asterisks are the capped majors. I'd say it's difficult for a UC-to-UC transfer to get accepted into a capped major because it already is difficult as it is to transfer in the first place.

gobama, there are capped majors at Cal. Just doesn't concern me, b/c I didn't apply to any of them. sorry to freak you out. If you think you can do it, then don't let anyone on this forum stop you.

I was saying that since you said after one year, you'd have enough units to transfer as a junior, correct? Maybe I read it incorrectly.

if that is correct, if you decide to spend another year at Cal to finish prereqs, you might go over your unit limit. You can't be senior standing at your current college and apply for juinor transfer.

orion8: what's senior standing? I have IB credits which ucla gives me 30, and then each semester at cal averages 15, so 30 each year, plus summer school. however, i don't have to count the high school ones if it hurts me. then there are a few from three cc courses that i did in high school. so, where does that put me?

oh yeah. i forgot. i had that problem too. yeah, when I talked to UCSD, they count AP/IB credit to put you over to 60 unit-limit, but they don't count it towards pushing you to senior standing (over 90 semester units).

And since you said that UCLA policy is the same as UCSD's, you're good.
Your credit background sounds like mine. I went to CC in high school too. Not that it's important, just an interesting coincidence.

Hey gobama

this is kinda late but i wanna go to berkeley because i live in SF. It's very convenient and less expensive for me. Also, I don't wanna be away from my bf.

I applied to berkeley 3 times and never got in (high school, community college, appeal). You should be proud of yourself.

emucla: thank you. it's so unfair. we should call the schools and say: hey, we'd like to swap places at your schools, you're not getting an extra person or anything, just let us switch please."

nah. that would never happen
but honestly, (i'm serious) if you'd wanna try it, i'm game.

wait what do you mean "it's kinda late"? were you able to change something?

nvm about me saying "its kinda late"

but yea it's unfair. lol. But it's ok. I just think that I'm not meant to be at berkeley. :/

do i have to keep calling ucla to ask about transfer courses and questions (the website only helps a bit) or can i ask the transfer office at berkeley about how to transfer to la?

geez i wish i got into UCB~ ;]
