D has been accepted. Yea! This is absolutely her #1 school!
We have filled out FAFSA and now just waiting.

With this economy, we only have about 20,000 that we can put into D's first year. Not sure if this is realistic or not that financially she can attend.

I don't know if this is usual and customary, however my D transferred in to Eugene Lang/Parson's (their dual degree program) almost 2 years ago. her FA package is a full ride, save for living expenses, which btw are criminal in NYC. She lives off campus (renting a room in an apt) which is substantially less expensive than the dorms (where you STILL have to purchase your own food or meal plan).

Before she transferred we were biting our nails because she had an amazing FA package at the previous school and without something similar the NSU was going to be out of the question.

You mention what you can provide for the 1st year, what happens after that?

One thing that came as a huge shock was the "average" graduation is 5 years from a Parson's program (longer still for fashion). So my D needed to add 5 full years to her already completed 1 from prior school. Her "original" grad date was to be class of 2010, now it's either 2011 or 2012. Don't ask, we're back to nail biting.

Thanks for the reply. We expect to be able to pay more after the first year. I am only going one year at a time right now.
How did she get a full ride financial aid packet?
Are there scholarships we should be asking about?
I called the FA office and they said just to fill out fafsa and wait.

She got the usual for low income - Pell, Pell supplemental, both subsidized & unsubsidized loans (we expect those; about $5k a year), a "BA/BFA Merit scholarship" & a "Dean's scholarship".

Our efc has been between $0 & $2k. I am on layoff since December, but that doesn't help at all for this coming school year.

She didn't "do" anything for the scholarships, just the usual and customary portfolio and essay submissions. She made a video essay which they liked a lot.

Has your D gone to visit the school? It's definitely got a "vibe". Where are you all from?

We are from North carolina and yes, we did visit Parsons last january. Also visited SVA and Tisch. D went to pre-college summer at SVA and Tisch. Loved being in NYC for a month for each of the past two summers.
She applied and was rejected to Tisch and accepted to SVA and Parsons.
Decided on Parsons because of the emphasis on fashion and advertising and the opportunity to take classes from the other New School schools. In additon, she liked pre-college SVA but was afraid she wouldn't like college SVA.
Our EFC was 5565 - just above where we would have qualified for Pell. uhg. We estimated so possibly our actual tax returns will look a little different but we won't know that for a little bit yet.
We inadvertently filled out our fafsa at fafsa.com rather than the government site. I ended up paying 79.00 to get help filling it out. This company sent me an estimated amount the colleges would give her in a financial aid package and it was very depressing! They said Parsons would give her about 1700 in schlarships and the rest in loans. This would not be good. Hopefully, the real package will look different. I am freaking out a little.
Like I said, we have 20,000 for this year. I just don't know.

Wow, I didn't know there was a fafsa.com, what a drag. I suspect "they" (fafsa.com) has no idea and is pulling info from books. "We" were on edge the entire time "we" were waiting for the FA package too, so I hear you loud and clear.

It's good your D had a chance to visit and spend time in the city, it IS amazing!

My fingers will be crossed for you & your D that things work out in your favor. The school was not invested with Bernie Madoff so that's good news! :0

My D has been accepted to Parsons Eugene Lang program.
She is on her own, not living at home (filing own taxes). I think this should help her for Pell grants, etc., but honestly do not know. Do “they” still consider family contributions? And if we do contribute, would that somehow count against her if she is filing taxes/FAFSA as self-supporting?

Great info on the apt vs dorm living. Protective Mom wanted her to live in dorms, but now that she’s on her own … I’m encouraged.

Congrats to your D, zuzuzpetals. I haven’t a clue how Parsons/Lang handles FA in her situation. Perhaps you could post again on the Financial Aid board. There are a lot of diverse situations here.

Hello, my name is Valerie and this winter i was accepted into Parsons for undergrad for the fall 2012 semester. This is absolutely my dream school and first choice and after completing the summer program in 2011 my heart is absolutely set on going here. The problem is that tuition including room/board is close to 60k and my family just cannot afford it! Parsons has given me about 9k in scholarships and FAFSA gave me about 5.5k per year in loans…however this is not enough! My father does not want to take out a Plus Loan because he wishes any loans to be on my name not his…Does anyone know what I can do to get extra aid? Has anyone had experience in financing the Parsons education? What kind of private loans are out there that people have used? Where did you get your funds? Any response is helpful, if anyone would like you can even email me at valeria.segal***********. Please and thank you!!!

Valeria, congratulations on acceptance to Parsons! However, from what you’ve written it seriously sounds as if you and your family cannot afford this school. You do not want to graduate ANY undergraduate program with over $100,000 debt! On average it takes more than 5 years to get through Parsons.

Hopefully you have applied to other schools that provide better aid/scholarships and that you will enjoy their programs as well.
