It's true - NYU financial aid is rotten

At this point, DD has gotten financial aid packages from 3 highly ranked private colleges/universities and the NYU one is roughly half in grants/scholarships compared to the others. It sure knocks it out of the choice list!

Momfromme, can you give us some numbers? My S is interested in NYU, and plans to apply there next year, but I just don't think it's going to be financially feasible.

Our FAFSA EFC was about $14,500, meaning that this what we could afford to contribute to the cost of approximately $45,000. However, we were offered $12,500 in grant and about $2000 in work study. So even counting the work study, we would have a bill of 45K minus 14.5K, meaning that we would be expected to pay nearly $30,000, about $15,000 more than our FAFSA expected family contribution.

Did they offer you loans?

Oh, yes, lots of loans...although one line noted the very large PLUS loans we could apply for. For us, this is far from helpful, especially as she has strong financial aid offers from other places she also likes.

I don't think you should complain as your aid report sounds very generous....

yup, my family: 3000EFC and $8000 scholarship. hooray.

This thread scares me!

i got a 10k scholarship from gallatin and federal grants/work study that amount to another 10k. they gave me loans that amount to 18k. looks like i'll be commuting :-/

momfromme, that's actually pretty nice compared to what a lot of people get! But it's true, NYU is known to be horrible with financial aid

don't give up hope! i don't know what my EFC was but I got a 23K scholarship to steinhardt. :) and i'm not some amazing 2400 SAT kid either... 1990/2400. i got into the scholars program and so i'm sure they give out the best merit money there. I've read the most NYU gives is 25000 merit scholarships, but I'm no expert.

Well I got 12,500 CAS scholarship. That's it. Their estimated total loans is 32 grand a year. I'm really not sure if I can handle that. Any advice is welcome.

I think merit scholarships are much easier to come by if you're applying to Steinhardt, SCPS or Nursing.

I don't understand how some of you whine because someone is not giving you or your child a FREE ride. If the loans are available and you don't want them--then the answer seems clear. Get a loan or take the great freeride elsewhere. I do also recall someone's sage advice; YOU get what YOU pay for.

My girlfriend was offered $48,760 dollars, a little over half in grants and the rest in loans. The tuition is $48,763. She was thrilled and is going next year. She was going to BU before this, as they gave her less than NYU but a lot at the time. I did not apply for FA so my acceptance packet didn't have anything, so I can't say personally. But she's proof that its not that bad

$24K in loans for 4 years is one heck of a debt at graduation. Still, I guess it's better than $48K times 4. I'm just lamenting the high cost of a private school education.

Yes, I think in dd's case, the $ was from a CAS scholarship, pretty much. She is a NMF. I can believe it's better than what other folks got from NYU, but it's not enough for us, considering that the other 5 schools to which she was accepted would be less expensive.

Ludascrispat26 -- Your girlfriend did amazingly!! Congrats to her!!

EFC = 27k

FA Package:

7.5k Stern Scholarship
4k Work-Study
32k Loans

Yes. No grants :(. Not that bad really, about 20k in loans over 4 years

i got 18,998 in scholarship and the rest in loans and work study. this is good right??? (By the way..... i looooooooooove NYU)

oh wait...38k in loans. damn that means 44k loans in 4 years...screw u NYU :P

I'm sure momfroomme there are many schools less expensive---but they are not NYU. NYU was your daughter's first choice for a reason---otherwise I doubt you would be posting here.
