D has an opportunity for an athletic scholarship, but we know nothing about it and the website isn't that informational. What is the quality of the education? Exact location in relation to Manhattan? Make-up of the students? ANy help is appreciated!

I don't know much about Wagner, but they just came in for some praise for innovation in this story, posted on another thread:

I also know someone who teaches in the music dept. there, David Shulenberg (B.A., Harvard ; M.A., Stanford; Ph.D., Stony Brook). If he's even remotely typical of the faculty, your D will get a first-rate education. He's a nationally known scholar-performer.

That link was really interesting. Thanks for the info!

Anyone else know anything about it or its location?

I think it's on Staten Island and their basketball coach was/is Derek Wittenberg (the former NC State player in the Jimmy Valvano championship year).

You're right, it is on Staten Island. I guess that's what I really want to know. What is Staten Island like?

It's on Staten Island.....lol? Definitely unique.

sunshadow-never really been there long enough to judge the place, but here's a link

Don't know much good or bad about Wagner, but I can tell you that Staten Island is a a cultural abyss, but its not hard to hop a bus into the Port Authority of Manhattan on the weekends. I moved there from Brooklyn at 16, and left at 18 for college. Its now 37 years later, and the place has gotten worse. I had two good years in high school, but have never liked going back. Bottom line, if you like the school and it meets your needs, then buckle down all week and party in Manhattan on the weekends. Good luck!

I don't know much about Wagner, but I believe that the Music Department in general is fairly strong--they host a Young Artists competition in the spring that is very well-attended. It's in a decent safe area and the buildings are mainly brick and reasonably attractive. Staten Island, while part of NYC, is more spread out than most parts of the city. It has many private homes and some extremely expensive areas. Many parts of it are more like a typical suburb--much less dense than city living. Although I don't know anything about Staten Island nightlife, the proximity to Manhattan is quite good.

I believe it is a Lutheran college.

A school named after Riccardo Wagner must have good music programs

But, honestly, I?ve never heard of it.

Oh that connects very well with his masterpiece, Parsifal ? the most soul-wrenching musical drama of all time

Staten Island is completely different from the rest of NYC. Although it is geographically close to Manhattan, it's a pain to get to if you don't have a car. There's a ferry that goes from the northern tip of Staten Island to the southern tip of Manhattan, and there are also express buses that connect the two boroughs. If you drive, you have to drive across the Verrazano Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn, and then into Manhattan.

We drove around the campus several years ago. We were not there for a tour, but in the area for another reason. We did not like the surrounding area at all. The campus looked nice with a beautiful view.

It is supposed to have a beautiful campus- with views of Manhattan. My understanding is that the accounting program is highly respected in the NY area.

Is there a current Wagner BA musical theater student who could fill us in on the program. I'm very interested but really need to hear the pros and cons. Anyone see one of their musicals recently?

I've seen pictures of the school from a friend. It's a very pretty campus.

The tennis courts are gorgeous, with gorgeous views of the city.

The immediate area is nice, wooden, secluded...but once you leave the immediate area of the school, you're in a very poor area. It's a safe area, but poor (and not too college friendly). The city is accessable though, so your daughter will have plenty to do.

I live on Staten Island myself and can inform you greatly on Wagner College. Wagner college is a tough academical school whose specialty is Theatre and its professors there are top notch as a member stated before that there are Harvard Alumni who teach the students there. The area there is a nice area and views of NYC are amazing. It is only about half an hour with express bus to reach the city and 1 hour with traffic, it can also be reached by taking the train to the St. George ferry where you can hop on the daily boat to manhattan which comes every half an hour. Its on campus road where St. Johns is University as well. The area is nice, but as soon as you leave it you go into the alrighty areas.

Thanks so much for the input, everyone. I am just surprised that being from Boston and rather involved in the whole college process that I have never heard of it. Probably because it is focused on theatre and music. I am not really sure how golf would fit in for that area, though...

Shelli,
I grew up on SI. Actually used the Wagner library for my Advanced Bio course in HS. My sister, who still lives on SI, goes to many of the Wagner theater productions each year. She is very impressed with the quality of their productions. She also gets to Broadway regularly.

sunshadow,
There are several golf courses on Staten Island; one fairly close to Wagner.
