I know someone who got accepted with a C+ in Honors Physics first semester of junior year. Miracles do happen!

wow…what an inspiration there IvanKaramozov. i wonder what amazing things THAT person has done.

thanks for ur help, guys

[Keys to the Kingdom - Boston Magazine](http://www.bostonmagazine.com/articles/keys_to_the_kingdom/)

Sort of an useful overview of the admissions process (from regional admission officer to the full committee), but it’s slightly outdated (from back when Harvard still had EA) and I also thought it contained gross exaggerations thrown in for dramatic effects - but overall it’s useful.

do u think an A in ap calc senior yr will help to mitigate the B i got second sem precalc honors junior yr?

stop it. theres no nice way to say it, youre caring too much. try your best and if you get in you get in and if you dont you dont.

in asking if the A will “mitigate” the B, who knows? but adcoms certainly dont use any set formulas or anything that stipulate that an A in a subject following a B makes the B any less important, so your question is pointless and you know it. but what we all can tell you is that a A is better than a B, so try and get one.

BUT THIS B WILL NOT MAKE OR BREAK YOU. (when i got a B last year in junior year i didnt even mind it really for even a second. just work hard and itll work out. i promise you)

The only way I can see a B significantly hurting you is if your rank got significantly lower because of it.

^Grades that lower your rank do not necessarily sound the death knell for your academic ambitions.

Almafuerte, obviously you didn’t listen to my earlier post. Calm Down. It’s one B, and it isn’t going to do anything to your admission chances. Stop worrying about “mitigating” it. There’s no “mitigating” to do. You got a B, that’s it. Just do your best throughout the rest of high school and apply when the time comes. Best of luck in the future.

Harsh, but it sums up the thread nicely.

ok everyone- all i can say is thanks. All the posts helped me calm down. thanks! it’s a B. it’s done. i’ll move on.

I was accepted to Harvard with 2 B’s on my midyear report (no B’s before that though). My courseload was orchestra, AP English Lit, AP US History, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and math and physics at… let’s just say a prestigious university. I had B’s in AP US History and physics. This didn’t affect my admissions decision even though I indicated that I wanted to major in physics, so you should be fine =)

what was your GPA before that?

um i got a B in AB calc freshman year. ill let u know if i get rejected because of that.
seriously tho u can always show your strength in math in some other way…

I wasn’t happy about getting my first B’s in high school either (I wasn’t shaking or breaking down, but I thought, based on previous admits to these colleges from my high school, that I was done), but in the end, it didn’t matter. I got 2 B’s, one each in my last two semesters (1 in 2nd semester junior year, 1 in 1st semester senior year; kind of a DOWNWARD trend, if you ask me). Granted, I didn’t get into Harvard, but I did get into other HYPSM schools.

thats quite comforting… do you mind me asking which schools?

EC2012Y - I’m not sure if you were addressing me, but my GPA before senior year was 4.0 unweighted, 4.71 weighted (probably top 2% of my school). I guess the lowering of grades senior year was acceptable because I had a more challenging courseload than basically anyone at my school. Also, there was additional summer coursework which wasn’t factored into the official GPA but would have made the 2 B’s almost irrelevant.

Assuming you’re asking me, Yale and Stanford (I chose Yale). I got rejected from Harvard, Princeton, and MIT, which shows that it really is a crapshoot when it comes to tippy-top schools (like people always say here).

alot of people get in with Bs, but the ones that i have met have been legacies, so that might make a difference… but i assume 1 b is not going to ruin you

Jersey I’m sorry to tell you, but a rude poster like you probably won’t get into any college.
Learn to respect others first, and come back.

Good luck on your interviews, try to use your “facade”- so you can hide your true personality.

Seriously, what is the point in scaring the OP?

To the OP: No a B will not jeopardize your chances. Do your best, and good luck!

^ I think you might be the only person on this entire thread that actually thought my post was serious.

Add a few ad hominem attacks to your complete obliviousness and your post has entertained me greatly.
