so i'm a junior in high school, female. i'm in computer science 4 this year, and i love it. i plan to pursue computer science in college and virginia tech is right now my number 1 choice. i would love if someone would be willing to talk to me about it or answer some questions i have?

do you think i could get in? 3.7, 4.5 weighted. 9 APs by the end of highschool. 1920 SATS (kinda sucks, i'm taking it again soon), white female, out of state, nhs, tons of community service, no work experience, varsity cross country, indoor/outdoor track all 4 years, 3 time state champion cross country team.

i know its going to be challenging, especially in the engineering school, and i'm okay with that. but i still want to have fun. how are the parties? are people work hard/play hard?

ive heard that blacksburg is really boring, but how bad is it really? what is there to do?

in general, how are the people? diversity? are people accepting? preppy?

i'm big into sports, especially football. how hard is it to get tickets? about how many games do you think i'd be able to go to?

how is the weather? i'm from maryland. is it probably about the same?

any fun places to go on weekends? how far is virginia beach or other places?

thank you sooo much, really.

Just looking at the statistics of the school, I’d say definitely. Average SAT score (1600 scale) is 1238, which is about the 80th percentile, while your score on the 2400 scale is an 88th percentile(ish). Why are you retaking the SAT, might I ask? I think being better than 88% of people is pretty good, stellar actually. Coupled with AP’s, a great GPA, and great ec’s, why wouldn’t you get it?

It confuses me, this whole notion of really high ‘grade’ (as in type, not grades) students being worried about getting into schools. It’s not that hard to get in, from reading statistics. I’m perfectly happy with my 4.176 weighted, 3.75 normalized, and why wouldn’t anyone be? And remember, if you don’t get in, there are always tons more schools.

Good luck!

yeah i know what you mean, but i come from a high school that is really competitive. like an eighth of the graduating class is going to ivy leagues, and both my sitsers got 2300 on their sats. i’m probably not even top 20%.

hlanderson93, welcome to cc! If you look over at the discussion menu and go to discussion home you will find a link for alphabetical list of colleges. Click on Virginia Tech and post your questions there. You will hopefully get some of the students to respond in due time. Several are seniors and have a lot of great information to share.

As a parent of a very content second year student, VT has proven to be a great selection for his school. Challenging workload, but wonderful fun, too. So far he has found just the college experience that he was looking for.

Best of luck with everything as you start your search!

thanks so much for the help!
