Here’s the study that’s been cited recently regarding different boosters. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.10.10.21264827v1.full.pdf
I think it’s a preprint and they themselves acknowledge limitations. Note that they used a full dose Moderna not the 1/2 dose booster. And while Pfizer followed by Moderna was higher than all Pfizer it was not statistically significant, if I understand this correctly.
I think we aren’t sure if the larger Moderna dose is really what makes the difference against Delta. Against Alpha Pfizer looked better. Against Delta Moderna has. There’s a lot we still don’t know. Both have done an amazing job in protecting against hospitalization and death up to this point.
I believe CVS redid their COVID vaccination scheduling overnight to set up for the just approved boosters. They cover the mix-and-match concept and distinguish between boosters and third shots. I am over 65 and over seven months past my second Moderna. So it’s likely Walgreens is also now set up for the newly approved boosters. You could make the appointment then call the pharmacy directly to double check that it’s the new booster dose.
Your post-vax life is very different than mine. Nothing wrong with that, of course – we all have different comfort levels. Glad that your stopping for 7 days is no big deal for you.
I just realized that for me to visit my mil it would require me to do the opposite, which would be for me to have to be close to people who are much less risk-averse than I am. None of them would take precautions for me, which is why I have no intention to go see them during the holiday season. We usually do NOT go to mil’s for the holidays (states away), but this year there are some things happening which could mean a bigger pull for D to see his mother.
CVS has updated but Rite Aid still seems to be working on it as of a few minutes ago. I’ve been trying to schedule Moderna boosters for H and me but can’t get through the prompt about being immunocompromised. Since I check no, I get an oops! you can’t schedule because you don’t meet guidelines. We are both 66 and about 7 months out from our second Moderna dose so should be eligible. Hopefully, they get things correct soon.
I just scheduled through Walgreen’s for my mom. I don’t think she is trusting me (LOL) because she got her original doses through the health department at no charge. I told her I don’t think she will be charged for this either - she has Medicare and supplemental insurance - but honestly if they do I don’t care let’s get this booster in the arm!!!
It was a chart from the FDA meeting if I remember correctly. This is a snip-it image from our physician and leadership talk yesterday and I couldn’t include the reference in the snip-it because it was adjacent to our hospital logo, which I didn’t want to include. But I think that’s what it said. We usually get a copy of the power point presentation sent to us following the talk but it never came yesterday. Sorry. But it was not a literature reference - it said something like FDA review or something like that.
Tried to get my H to sign up since he is 65 - he had Moderna for the first two doses - now he’s saying he wants to wait and see if he should “cross over” to Pfizer (tosses up hands!)
Rite Aid appointment scheduler working now. Will now let 65+ sign up for all 3 boosters based on age alone. Scheduled for Sunday. We are going out of town for Thanksgiving and there will be 6 of us getting together for the holiday for a few days. All 6 are already vaccinated and the 3 65+ folks will also have gotten boosters by then.
Of course, the FDA and CDC updated guidelines do not give the general public much guidance on whether choosing the same or different vaccine as a booster would be significantly better.
