My wife (MSU Grad) and D believe that UM looks better on a resume than Honors college MSU. I am also an MSU grad so this hurts, however, it took me two years and a move to Texas to find a ‘real job’ when I graduated in the early 80s so it is hard to argue (pure commission door to door sales jobs don’t count).

My D was accepted at MSU a few weeks back. He has a 3.9 unweighted GPA and 35 ACT and has received the Honors college “Green Carpet Day” invite (ignored) and a spend a day at MSU and shadow an HC student invite a few days back (also ignored).

He is aiming for MIT, Columbia, Caltech, Duke, NC, GT with UM as his safety and Honors MSU as his super safety. His thinking is that there is no reason to attend these Honors College recruiting events and miss a day of school because he will be going to MSU no matter what if his dream colleges and safety school UM turn him down. Again, hard for me to argue other than I think it would be good to get a flavor of the MSU.

So all things being equal, is standard UM a better move then HC MSU? My thought is UM might look a little better on the resume but HC MSU would be a great experience. He will be majoring in one of the STEM fields.

ChiselCheeks, I’m similar to your son (4.0/35), but I’m not looking at those types of schools (too expensive and I would love to go to any of my 3 schools: Michigan, MSU, or Case).

I was wondering the same thing about UMich (possibly Honors) vs MSU Honors. They’re both great schools and both have what I’m looking for. I’m a Muslim though and it seems UMich has a larger/stronger community of Muslims compared to Case or State. Especially considering the fact that I’m a Shi`i and Ann Arbor is closer to Dearborn and UMich gets more people from Dearborn. But then again, MSU Honors sounds like a great experience and they also have a Muslim community–but it seems to have a lot of internationals instead of in-state residents. I’ll have to think about it more in December, I guess.

LOL, sorry for the musings. If anyone wants to comment, please do so.

ChiselCheeks/ANasir, one thing to consider are the research projects available to students while they are on campus. MSU Honors students get a wider selection and are often a top choice for these positions. You might be able to get into a top research project at MSU where it is a lot more competitive at UM.

Plus, you can always apply for your own research at MSU. Especially in something like the STEM field, your research projects speak volumes on a resume.

Thank you for that msuadmissions. Yes, at MSU, I will get the PA so that is in major consideration.

MSU, Case, and UMich are all great schools and I’ll wait to make the decision in December when I’ll get tangible stuff from UMich and Case. Also the ADS at MSU is a great opportunity too. I know I can’t go wrong with any school. :)

My application has been “under consideration with [my] reviewing counselor” for 4 weeks now. Does this mean they’ve been looking at my application for that long? I’m getting a little bothered its taking so long. Is this normal?

My daughter was finally accepted today online. To give others some reference, here are her dates.

9/4/12 - Required items received by MSU.
9/18/12 - Status changed to read …

“Your application is currently under consideration with your reviewing counselor. You will receive an initial decision on your application for admission within 12 weeks. Your patience during the review process is greatly appreciated.”

Everything was sent in on 10/1/12, and I still haven’t been accepted…

I applied to RCAH, and here are my stats.

I don’t see why it’s taking so long…and I’m freaking out.

Good essay as well!

This school really isn’t that difficult to get into! Good luck!

saleemyas3, so sorry. My oldest applied with a 3.5 unweighted, lots of APs and 29 GPA to the first year of RCAH and State did the same thing asked for first tri grades…my son never submitted and went somewhere else and graduated college in 2011. S2 never applied to State after they deferred his brother and he too headed somewhere else and will graduate next year. My third has a much higher GPA and has heard nothing. I think we need to ask all our family members to take down the UofM flags or I fear we are cursed and S3 will also be deferred :-). Of my 3 the third son would be the best Spartan of the bunch. Hopefully he’ll hear soon, I think all his “stuff” was submitted about mid-October. S3 will be in engineering…somewhere.
