Anyone have a bet on the Tonys?

Revival Musical: Carousel or MFL, Musical: Spongebob or Band’s Visit. Play Revival: Angels In America, Play: Harry Potter

To be honest, this season, with very few exceptions, is extremely weak, especially compared to last year. I really hope that Lauren Ridloff and Hailey Kilgore win in their categories but everyone seems to think that this will be a who-the-heck-knows who will win night. The highlight may be Springsteen performing!

My parents saw and loved carousel, so I guess I’ll give it my vote for best revival, haha. The Band’s Visit is the favorite for best musical, and everyone is talking about Harry Potter. Costumes or set design, Frozen is a visual feast and Spongebob super creative. Mean Girls for book.

Well, I can’t say I am looking forward to The Boss. He is not my favorite. But I agree that anything could happen tonight. So that makes it fun to watch. I have only seen a few shows so I am not invested, just going to enjoy to festivities

S17 just stormed out, calling “shenanigans” on Bruce. “It’s heartfelt, mom, but couldn’t he give us a rounding rendition of Thunder Road. This audience could actually sing along.”

I was shocked by how woefully unknowledgeable my theater tech BFA major son is about theater in general. He didn’t know who half the presenters were. I had to cue him in to them. Claire Danes - Juliet in the horrible Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio. John Leguzaimo - saber tooth tiger in Ice Age. He did recognize Tony Shalhoub because we are Monk fans. He also said that he felt bad for the Elsa actress in Frozen, because nobody, but nobody is Idina Menzel.

I felt badly that Chita Rivera and Andrew Lloyd Webber were relegated to video snippets and was sad that Lupone didn’t sing. I could hear her sing Don’t Cry for me, Argentina every day.

@techmom99 Agreed about Bruce but with him doing 8 shows a week, it isn’t surprising.

That is surprising that your son didn’t know half the presenters, all of whom have Broadway credits. He should visit IBDB and he’ll probably be amazed at who has theatre credits.

He needn’t feel bad for her. Caissie has more Broadway credits than Idina.

Happy for the Angels in America wins. That and Three Tall Women were both wonderful. If not for the revivals, this would have been an even more desolate year. Not surprising that Mean Girls got shut out. Congrats to The Band’s Visit, a largely unknown musical, that everyone should see.

The Parkland kids and their teacher brought tears to my eyes.

Here’s hoping that next season provides theatre-goers with better opportunities! And bravo to DeNiro.

Thought it was a pretty lack luster show. The Boss included. But the highlight was DeNiro.

Yeah, shouting vulgarities was definitely more of a highlight than watching and listening to those amazing Marjory Stoneman Douglas students singing Seasons of Love… (sarcasm intended). Jeez.

@CMB625 - let’s take it down a notch, shall we? I agree that seeing the Parkland kids sing brought me to tears. And I thought they were marvelous, but also think that any one of them would have given up that moment in an instant to NOT have the notoriety that the tragedy they experienced has brought to their school. And I don’t admire DeNiro using profanity on national tv (though it is certainly his normal way of talking) if only b/c the networks then have to bleep. But I admire ANYONE who speaks for their beliefs. And the arts community needs all the shouts it can get these days.

@toowonderful I am just saying that the “highlight” of an awards show probably shouldn’t be someone shouting vulgarities when his job was to introduce another artist. We can all speak for our beliefs respectfully. And, also, it’s very obvious that yes, those students would easily give up the notoriety they have to not have experienced that tragedy. You’re preaching to the choir on that one.
