Hi, I’m hoping other parents can share updates on their kids in Tallahassee at either FSU or FAMU. Since the area took a pretty solid hit from the hurricane last night, the power outages may last for days. I have a daughter in a dorm there. She does not have a food plan, and cannot cook due to power loss, plus will lose most of the food in her fridge. Seminole dining provided continental breakfast this morning and some boxed lunches, but I don’t know what the food options are going to be like for kids without a meal plan over the next few days. The latest update from the city indicates power won’t be restored until Sunday, at least. My daughter’s cell phone battery ran out, plus cell towers that have battery backup will probably go down soon, so we won’t be able to reach them directly. So if you are a parent of a Tallahassee student, could you please share any updates you may hear? Thanks everyone!
There will be a lot of businesses with generators and she might be able to charge a cell phone there. Plenty of food doesn’t require cooking (PB&J), water comes in bottles.
She’s better off in a dorm setting than living in a house. They will band together and have an adventure.
Can’t buy peanut butter or jelly–trees and power lines are down and it is impossible to get to a store, even if she had a car (which she doesn’t). Sewer lines are damaged and other damage to the city is extensive based on initial news reports. I’m sure they are having adventures. Was actually hoping for updates from people that have heard from loved ones in town about the extent of damages and progress on cleanup, or who have other university based news.
I saw the head of the FSU police on the weather channel. He said they would be providing food for kids in the dorms. They won’t let them starve. He said they had an emergency plan in place and that it’s working. He said they were asking the kids to stay in the dorm this morning while they cleared down power lines and trees.
Decided my D will be getting a back up cell phone battery in her Christmas stocking this year!
Did she prepare for the storm with any non perishables and water just in case the storm hit?
Great news, thank you! I also just learned that the civic center is having an event tonight for the students from 6 to 11 PM. They will be sending free buses through the campus to pick students up at the dorms starting at 5:30. They will have charging stations set up, plus snacks, bottled water, movies and other entertainment for the students. All free.
Oh, and I forget to mention that the civic center air conditioning works just fine, which I’m sure will be one of the main attractions!
Sorry to hear that they have to go through all this. But safety is the most important thing. Hopefully everyone is safe and sound.
Orchid, any updates?
