Fay

Well, Tropical storm Fay will hopefully just be alot of rain and wind. But FSU is ready. On the main FSU.edu page there is already a link prominently displayed for Tropical Storm Fay. This takes you to a comprehensive page with latest university announcements and updates, a link to the latest National Hurricane site, an about all the info you could need.

Here in South Florida it is sunny with the wind picking up a bit. The east coast has tropical storm watches/warnings and the west coast has hurricane watches/warnings.

Since my D was driving up for rush tomorrow, and driving weather in the southern part of the state will be deteriorating some, she left today. Her roommate is already there for band. She will be a "guest" of her roommate tonight, and will officially move in tomorrow in the morning. She wanted to get out today, and I decided this was probably a good plan for a 6 hour drive.

If you are coming from out of state, from north of Tallahassee, the weather in Tally should hold up until Tues when it will get rainy and windy, with the worse weather coming Wed. With band members already there, those for rush coming Monday, and most everyone else traveling Tues, Wed would be a good day to deal with this, as it is NOT a travel day for too many folks. I know that a stormy day is not a good move-in day, but it beats traveling on that day. Then by Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun the trip back should be OK. If it's bad enough Wed, the kids can move in with basics and the rest of their stuff can be moved in on Thurs. What a way to start the year!!! They can make it fun. A Hurricane party.

This is all based on projections, and those of us in Florida know how projections do not always pan out. This storm will hopefully be a simple CAT 1 or less when it hits, and hopefully will hit further south, and lessen by the time it reaches Tally. Remember, evacuations are basically only for those who live on the water, a barrier island, the intercoastal or in low lying areas/flood prone areas or trailors. Tallahassee won't be evacuated, and those dorms are about the best place a student could be in a storm. I believe all of the dorms have emergency generators.

My D is returning by herself (her idea) and I will travel up for the weekend to help with final room things, bringing a few more bigger things in my car that she could not fit and did not bring for summer. Given the forcast, and having lived in Florida for nearly my entire life, I am not uneasy about her being there without family, based on current projections. So for those of you who have not dealt with storms firsthand, this looks to be something that will be a major hassle, but not a major risk. Those driving might be considering a change in plans (arriving Thurs or Fri) but for those with flights booked, I would just plan on keeping plans intact.

This has been one area I have always appreciated about Florida State. They effectively communicate what they're doing and they prepare for emergencies. We greatly appreciate this as parents.

The dorms have generators and are very well constructed.

We are leaving one day later than planned, perhaps two. Otherwise it looked as if we'd be driving up with Fay, outrunning her halfway through, and unloading with her ontop of us again! Too much rain and a hassle for us. Besides the fact we didn't want to leave our pets too long in case the power went out and my mom wasn't too happy about driving into a major storm. Now we intend to follow in her wake. Ah well.
Great to hear the dorms have generators!

Q. Are students safe in the dorms during severe weather?

A. Given their heavy construction design, FSU residence halls are very safe.** All residence halls are equipped with back-up emergency generators.** During a storm, staff will continue to monitor conditions and, if need be, require residents to move to a center hallway for additional safety.

i seriously, seriously doubt that the power is going to go out...fay is a category one, and by the time she gets inland, she'll probably be downgraded to a tropical storm.

i'm sure it'll just be some wind and rain. nothing more.

"Fay is going to be a pain in the butt. " This AM I had the weather channel on and they were interviewing a seasoned Keys resident and this is what she had to say. Short and sweet.

Now that the path is projected to be a bit more easterly, the entire state is going to be wet and windy. For those traveling from anywhere in Florida to FSU, its going to be very wet and very windy. With more rain and wind. Some gusts and squalls. This appears to be a messy messy storm. I would agree it is going to be a pain......

It still looks like Tally will not get any major storm elements, just rain and wind, what could be alot of rain and wind. The coastal area that gets the actual entry might take a little hit with heavier rain and wind and flooding.

My part of northern South Florida is wet and windy. It makes for lousy driving weather and lousy move-in weather. I am a little worried that more airports will be affected then originally thought Sunday. This turn to the east may inconvenience more of you flying in from the North. Guess we just have to wait it out.

For students/families driving who decide to wait and come later in the week, don't worry, you won't be missing out an anything. If the weather is lousy, the activites get postponed anyway.

From the FSU website: Good news as of today

Tropical Storm Fay is not expected to pose any significant threat to the Tallahassee main campus.

This week’s orientation sessions and residence hall openings are expected to continue as scheduled (additional details below). Be advised university administrators are monitoring Fay and will take appropriate action should conditions warrant. (Posted 2:40 p.m. Aug. 18, 2008)

Tropical Storm Fay Projection

According to the current projected path, tropical strength winds will not reach Leon County; the main campus may receive 2 - 4” of rain on Wednesday, with isolated storms throughout the rest of the week. (Posted 11:15 a.m. Aug. 18, 2008)

sunnyflorida,
Where in "northern South Florida" do you live?

A little north of you!

Wah whoo for Palm Beach County! :D

Unfortunately we're still stuck here as it sits on top of us. Been getting the brute force of the storm. Some areas in the county have been struck by tornadoes. Most of the major roads to the street I live off of are closed in multiple areas due to down power lines (many in the area are without power, luckily we still have it here!) and flooding. The wind has been blowing the rain practically horizontal much of the time, beautiful sight! If we can get out tonight I'll still be able to make my disability appointment tomorrow afternoon so I have my fingers crossed! Hope everyone who is already up there is having fun!

Moved in today. Was very fortunate to have beautiful weather during move in. It started raining about 15 minutes ago but for some reason the sun is still shining. My dorm is much better than expected! I am in Kellum. It's a little damp but nothing a couple things of damp rid can't take care of. For some reason, I have cable in my room. I don't know if they're planning on shutting it off or what, but I'm taking advantage of it while I can. :) For those who have not moved in yet, hopefully there will be people there to help. I was SO furtunate to have five girls (a little overwhelming, but much appreciated!) come and help me take my stuff in my room. Took me two trips instead of ten! Very much appreciated. Hope everyone is enjoying it if they're here and stays dry if they aren't here. 8-)

Well, 14 inches of rain later..... we are drying out. It was rain, rain, wind and more rain.

Looks like Fay is moving at a crawl, and threatening to turn and bring heavy rain to the panhandle :(. I really hope is moves east or north.

krisssyyy: I think they give you free cable for the first few weeks to get you hooked so you will order it. Glad move in went smoothly.

krisssyyy- I was in Kellum, way back when..... I was on the 10th floor and faced Tenn. During the winter, our room was always cold...the heat hardly reached our floor. Hopefully it's better now...some 30 years later (gosh that made me feel old!!) Do the elevators stop at every floor now? They only use to stop at 1, 3, 6 & 9, so you either had to walk up or down one flight (unless you got on with a RA who had one of the "magic keys"). LOL

lol the elevator goes to all the floors. right now it's REALLY hot in my room, i think because the dehumidifier though. the air is on low and as cold as it gets but eh. sucks. I'll live. I'm starting to really like it here in Kellum, surprisingly. I started hanging up pictures and I really like my new little humble place. :) Maybe I'll post some pictures when i finish up with a few more things!

krisssyyy,
I'd love to see some pictures of Kellum...bring back all those memories. Which high school did you attend? My son is in Landis...he just graduated from Suncoast.

I went to Lake Worth. Gotta love the medical magnet. :) My roommate went to Suncoast! I'll be posting pictures sometime this weekend!

She probably know's my son. He played quads in the marching band.

Ah. Gotcha. I did color guard. I thought about doing it for Chiefs but I opted out and am doing Winterguard up here instead. Where is he staying?
