Well, Tropical storm Fay will hopefully just be alot of rain and wind. But FSU is ready. On the main FSU.edu page there is already a link prominently displayed for Tropical Storm Fay. This takes you to a comprehensive page with latest university announcements and updates, a link to the latest National Hurricane site, an about all the info you could need.

Here in South Florida it is sunny with the wind picking up a bit. The east coast has tropical storm watches/warnings and the west coast has hurricane watches/warnings.

Since my D was driving up for rush tomorrow, and driving weather in the southern part of the state will be deteriorating some, she left today. Her roommate is already there for band. She will be a "guest" of her roommate tonight, and will officially move in tomorrow in the morning. She wanted to get out today, and I decided this was probably a good plan for a 6 hour drive.

If you are coming from out of state, from north of Tallahassee, the weather in Tally should hold up until Tues when it will get rainy and windy, with the worse weather coming Wed. With band members already there, those for rush coming Monday, and most everyone else traveling Tues, Wed would be a good day to deal with this, as it is NOT a travel day for too many folks. I know that a stormy day is not a good move-in day, but it beats traveling on that day. Then by Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun the trip back should be OK. If it's bad enough Wed, the kids can move in with basics and the rest of their stuff can be moved in on Thurs. What a way to start the year!!! They can make it fun. A Hurricane party.

This is all based on projections, and those of us in Florida know how projections do not always pan out. This storm will hopefully be a simple CAT 1 or less when it hits, and hopefully will hit further south, and lessen by the time it reaches Tally. Remember, evacuations are basically only for those who live on the water, a barrier island, the intercoastal or in low lying areas/flood prone areas or trailors. Tallahassee won't be evacuated, and those dorms are about the best place a student could be in a storm. I believe all of the dorms have emergency generators.

My D is returning by herself (her idea) and I will travel up for the weekend to help with final room things, bringing a few more bigger things in my car that she could not fit and did not bring for summer. Given the forcast, and having lived in Florida for nearly my entire life, I am not uneasy about her being there without family, based on current projections. So for those of you who have not dealt with storms firsthand, this looks to be something that will be a major hassle, but not a major risk. Those driving might be considering a change in plans (arriving Thurs or Fri) but for those with flights booked, I would just plan on keeping plans intact.
