Anyone here going down for Engineering open house?

February 26 from 9-3

I'll see you there!

It's unfortunate that the open house for penn state engineering is also on that date.

was there another engineering open house last year? plz say yes? like in november?

anyone...?

No. It was the same day last year too, so we went to PSU. There was no other open house at UVA for engineers. I have to say that PSU's open house wasn't that great. It was VERY crowded & somewhat unorganized. Our first tour (aerospace) went overtime so we were late to the next one & couldn't get a seat. I'd go to UVA's, & arrange to see Penn State on an individual basis. Not that it mattered to us...son decided on Virginia Tech.

wait, tell me exactly, when was the engineering open house last year. i am confused. i went to one on november 2003. was there anything after that?

I don't remember the exact date, I just remember that we could only do 2 out of 3 - UVA, VT & PSU - & he chose VT & PSU.

this was in 2004? what month
but THERE was an open house in 2004 right?

The engineering open house conflict between PSU & UVA was in February 2004.

ok. great. which one did u like better between VT and psu?

There was no comparison. Virginia Tech was far more organized. At VT we had a large general info session then had small group sessions to choose from throughout the day. In addition to a presentation on specific majors, if you wanted to speak with faculty from that major you went to a room where there were faculty representatives & were able to speak with them individually. That was very nice, & not at all crowded when we went at the end of the day. You got a small group tour of the Ware Labs, which is where the student design projects are done. There was a session on engineering admissions, a general campus tour, a housing session, & some others to choose from that escape me at the moment. Because there were so many choices people disbursed & each session was small enough that you could ask questions. The down side to all those choices was that we had to split up a couple of times in order to cover everything. ie. I went to admissions while husband & son went to a different session. We didn't need the campus tour because we had already done that earlier in the year. There's a break to eat lunch & we chose to eat at Owens Dining Hall where the food was terrific. We had to pay for it though. At PSU lunch was free but the food wasn't great & the dining hall had long lines. Also at PSU the sessions were predominantly run by students with the exception of the sit down Mechanical Engineering session, which was the one that was so crowded that we had to stand out in the hall. Having students run things was good in the way that you got inside information on things, but it would have been nice to see a few more profs. We saw plenty of students at VT also, but it seemed like there were alot more profs available to talk to one on one. I regret that we never made it to a UVA engineering day. Our daughter is a UVA grad & had an incredibly positive experience there.

i'll be going to the open house, so i guess i'll be seeing some of you guys there

I sent you a PM soshamim

I went last year, it was stupid... I didnt learn a damn thing, other than the fact that uva was unorganized and unhelpful. I think it would be better to goto it after being at uva for a year, and trying to decide on a major. it wasnt an overall departmental open house, but individual majors had rooms set up. all of them were very specific, assuming we had some background knowledge... be prepared to get confused...

yea, he is right actually. i went in 2003, and after i visited the exhibits, i was very intimidated by them and i was reconsidering if i want to do engineering. however, it is very exciting and interesting. i couldnt believe what i could be doing.. if it were only that easy....
