Anyone here transfer out of UW?

I'm a freshman and I really don't like it here. Seattle is a great city, but UW has too much of a commuter feel to it. It seems like at least half the kids in my dorm go home on the weekend. The social scene is heavily based around greek life. UW has some great graduate programs, but for undergrad it's highly overrated imo. People here talk about how prestigious the school is, but it's definitely not on the level of the UC's.

I had a 3.75 my first term and it looks like I will have at least a 3.6 this quarter (if the term ended today I would have a 3.68).

Would love to hear how people are doing who transferred out of UW.

I'm considering transferring to University of Michigan, Oregon, or Texas.

UW is a great school in my opinion. Sorry that you don’t like it. Depending on where you’re from, it might not be for you. If you like Seattle itself (climate/people/atmosphere), then UT is not for you. Texas is a lot different than Washington. Having moved here from Bellevue, I have to say that Washington is much better.

Jeez that’s a little harsh for me to hear considering it’s going to be my #1 choice school next year (as you can tell from my username hahah). i like everything about UW and i can see how you see things though. there are plenty of other schools that are as good/better than UW for you to transfer to

just4ivaylo- have you ever been to Austin? It’s very different from the rest of the state of Texas. Seattle is a great city, but I’m completely unimpressed with UW. People who think that it is a top tier school are kidding themselves.

Hmm…sorry you feel that way. It definitely is one of the top universities in the country. I don’t think you can argue that.

Michelle, just because UW did not meet your standards you cannot neglect the fact that it remains a top tier school.

just4ivaylo- those rankings you provided have very little credibility. Ranking UW ahead of Texas, Maryland, Duke, Johns Hopkins, WashU, etc. That’s comical. Those schools are far more selective and have higher quality students. If we are talking about the UW’s med school or law school, then I could see your point. Unfortunately, the undergraduate education is mediocre at best and the quality of the undergrads here does not live up to the university’s “prestigious” reputation. Washington residents think far more highly of the university than those in other states. For an instate student who is trying to conserve resources, it’s a good “value” school, but to compare it to the UC’s in terms of prestige in laughable.

I will admit that I was not a great student in high school. I had decent grades and test scores. The level of competition here falls short of what I experienced at my high school. For the most part, classes here are not very challenging. I’m sure for pre-med and engineering students that is not the case. However, most students who attend UW are not in either discipline.

the greek system sucks, try to go to more house partys and be more sociable. I live in the dorms as well (freshmen) and I have never found people leaving for the weekend to be an issue.

Once again, I’m sorry you feel this way. Even though I do agree that some of those lists aren’t “credible”, the school is still very good. Search any site on Google, and it will tell you that you can get a great education at UW.

Also, of course WA residents are proud of it. It’s the premier university in the state, and it is a lot better than many, many universities of its kind throughout the country.

Hahaha, funny. I actually transferred from a UC to the UW. Which UC are you referring to? UCLA and Cal? Those are the only two considered “more prestigious” than UW. Maybe UCSD if you want to split hairs. The other 6? Not so much. Not at all.

While maybe not on par with Berkeley, I consider UW to be around UCLA and certainly ahead of the other UCs. Let’s not kid ourselves.

^ I totally agree. No one is going to argue about UCI, UCD, UCR, UCM, UCSB, or UCSC being better. In my book, not even UCSD. (Didn’t like that campus at all when I visited) The UC system is SO overrated in my opinion. I’m just glad I got myself out of there! Being a Husky is much better. ;]

But I would recommend to the OP to seriously give the UW a chance. I moved far away to that UC system as a freshman, and I ended up really regretting it. The grass is always greener on the other side. Then you get there, and realize it wasn’t that great after all.
