From what I've been told, Sports are just another way to show your motivation, teamwork, and leadership skills (if you make captain, etc.) I've never done a sport and I don't plan on doing one. Of course, there are a few times when I go into panic mood where I'm absolutely convinced that I need a sport to get into a good uni., but if you reason it out, as long as you're focused with your other ECs, you should be fine without a sport.

A great alternative to sports can be debate.

I love sports but I dont play high school sports bc i dont feel like putting all the time into it. Instead, i just play for fub with my friends.

I play tennis, and I think I'm pretty good. It's more for fun, but I played on the varsity team in 8th and 9th grade (I go to a Jr/Sr High). I skipped this year because I have too much work; maybe I'll play on the team junior year...

Leah:
Ahhaha. I totally know- I wanted VERY badly to quit marching band this year because I hated the way it was run, but I just couldn't. Hence I coined the phrase "Quitting colorguard is like leaving the mafia." XD Good luck in Dayton! I went and competed there my sophomore year (two years ago) in scholastic A and wound up losing phenomenally. It was a great experience though. ^^

A girl who graduated from my school marched Crossmen last year- if you've ever seen the show she's the one with the sabre solo. I considered trying out for them but decided I love Surf more, plus I've constantly heard some not so great things about George Hopkins and the way he runs things. But if you get the chance, definitely march a corps, somewhere, even if it isn't Div. I, because the experience I had was just amazing. The only bad thing is that none of my colleges even know what drum corps is, so it usually involves a lengthy explaination...

I'm sure nobody else on this board has any idea what we're talking about. XD

don't play any sports. I've never taken a single PE class in high school. I can't do push-ups, or run a mile in less than 20 minutes.
Maybe I can make it onto the Caltech soccer team next year

I'm sorry that you may not live past age 40...

I've never joined a sports team or anything, personally I'm not into that kind of stuff. But for my GYM class, I take weight training so I do a little bit of workout there. Nothing too sporty!

I used to go to the gym three or four times a week and do cardio and weights for at least an hour each time. I was in ridiculous shape--we had to take a "fitness test" in my biology class for our physiology unit (don't ask), and I got the highest score in the class. :D I let myself slip during the application process, and recently I've had to focus all my efforts on getting my IB assignments done on time, but I'm hoping to get back into my routine after I've handed in those last few chemistry labs. I ride every week, which is far more strenuous than you'd assume, walk home from school most days, go for random long walks in general, and go on long bike rides when I have the time or energy. I play tennis sometimes, but only for fun with my sister.

So yes, I do like exercise; I just hate organized sports. :)

Sports are awesome. I'm so glad that I started running. I'm a big fan of sports where individual achievement and progress can easily be measured (track, swimming, singles crew), as I think that many people are motivated by improvement, and its very easy to see improvement when it is the time on a clock.

Sports are fantastic tools to help you get into a great college. If you are smart and are good at sports, that's all you need to get into a top school, as long as you contact the coach. Sports show dedication and leadership, as well as intense personal drive, as many of you have said that you are not willing to give the time to play or compete, you all recognize that sports are serious committments, and are not taken lightly by players, coaches, or adcoms.

Nice! One of my instructors marched Crossmen in '05 and Crown in '06--he's incredible; now with First Flight for the winter season (Independent Open). Actually, all three of our instructors march FF (and I'm thinking about it next year if I end up going to UNC-CH, which is close enough to get to practices).

I'd have to agree about the Mafia. Trying to quit is like breaking your own kneecaps. And believe me, people have tried, including myself. haha

The thing I don't like about Crossmen is that I hear the Cadets get priority in their YEA organization (and I hate the Cadets along with most of the world lol).
Had a bad practice today. We changed our entire ending and Dayton is like 5 weeks away. ahhhh "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
