Anyone is the Classical Studio @ NYU?

Thanks, Sooz - I also enjoy hearing updates about your D and life after NYU! Mine had a super first year at Tisch. They do work them pretty hard, but it’s all good!

Related question - If one does the Classical Studio for a year, would that tend to be in lieu of a semester at RADA in London? Thanks everyone!

Hello,

I too am going to be in the classical studio this upcoming year and can answer some questions. I’ve never heard any rumor that the classical studio is going anywhere and wouldn’t believe it if I did. It’s a highly sought after program. To audition for the studio we just had to do one monologue that was written in verse for them, and then if you were called back you came and did it a second time. They sit down with you an do a brief interview as well. They ask for you to commit to a whole year, however occasionally someone leaves early (this is usually due to them being a senior though and graduating a semester early). It’s a full year program so if you leave halfway through, you only get half the education. If someone does a year at classical, that typically would be in lieu of a semester at RADA, however there’s nothing that says you couldn’t do both. Many people end up deciding what way they want to approach the classical technique and make a decision from there as RADA and Classical approach the work in different ways. I know people who have gotten into classical and then decided to go to RADA and vice versa.

My name is Daniel and I am the Assistant Director of The Classical Studio in the Department of Drama at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. I write to present facts.

The Classical Studio remains in operation as it has been for the past 20 years. The dissolution of The Classical Studio has never been a subject of discussion in the Department of Drama. Indeed, Louis Scheeder (the studio’s Director) and I remain committed to the studio’s evolution. In April, we auditioned and accepted our 2010/2011 ensemble with whom we are quite excited to begin working in the fall.

I invite you to visit the Department of Drama’s website (drama.tisch.nyu.edu) for information about our studio and the Department in general. If you have questions that are not answered by the website, you can call the Department of Drama at 212-998-1850 and ask to speak with someone who can help you out. You should also feel free to contact me and/or Louis with any questions you may have about The Classical Studio.
