Hi! I was just wondering if anyone is in or has been in the classical studio at NYU and could give me their opinions of it. Also, does anyone know how likely one is to be accepted into it as an advanced studio? I'm also emailing the Studio head, but I'd like some opinions from students too!
Thanks!

I have hears that this studio is being phased out. Does anyone know how soon that is happening or if it has already happened?

Hi, I’m not at Tisch but I do have a friend who is graduating this semester. Her strong point has always been classical text, so she planned on attending Classical Studio for her advanced training semesters. She auditioned, was admitted, and then turned it down in favor of Stone Street after attending a few of the studio’s productions and (I think) sitting in on a class. According to her, she felt as though her basic training in Atlantic would have worked better than what she saw in those productions.

Mileage varies, of course. Just because it wasn’t right for one person doesn’t mean it’s crap.

My D goes to NYU Tisch and has not heard anything about the Classical Studio being phased out. Classical is an advanced training studio, meaning you can’t go in as a freshman, the way you would into Atlantic, CAP21 (now the New Studio, for those just coming into NYU Tisch), Meisner and Adler. As noted above, you have to audition to get into Classical, unlike Stonestreet, which you basically just apply to after getting your “basic” training in CAP, Adler, Meisner, Atlantic, etc. Stonestreet is for film and television and Classical is for, well, the classics! Very, very different.

Since HannahKailey might be shy about phoning Tisch, and I am a person who repeated the “rumor” (??) about the Classical studio that I encountered here on CC, I made a call to the Tisch drama dept this morning myself.

The person I talked to said that the classical studio is NOT being phased out.

However, similarly to what bogface said (post #3), I have heard from two or three different sources that the classical studio at Tisch is not as strong as it once was.

I would strongly advise Hannah to communicate directly with as many current Tisch students (or very recent grads) as possible, if she is trying to decide between Tisch and another school.

It is not necessarily the easiest thing to find people to talk to, but it can be done though facebook, Private Messages here on CC, or sometimes CC members can put you in touch with students.

Talking to students was the only way my son was able to make a decision last year when he was trying to decide between NYU/Tisch and another school. He also was fortunate enough to visit the studio he had been placed in, since we live near enough to make that feasible.

Hi,
I think I’m the one who originally posted on here that the Classical studio wasn’t being continued at NYU.I’m a current Tisch freshman in Strasberg, and I was first told this by a staff member, then by numerous upperclassmen students who had wanted to pursue Classical as an option next year and were told they couldn’t because it wouldn’t exist. I myself have tried to contact the studio many times to no avail, and I was told this was because this is no longer continuing.
However, if this is not the case, I’m very sorry to have posted false info on here. I should be having a meeting with my advisor within the next few weeks, and I will be sure to discuss this with him, because I know a lot of people in my studio group were upset over it.
That being said, I had the opportunity to speak with some seniors after Tommy (some of whom were in it) who had the chance to be in Classical, and they highly recommended it. They even said that they felt that even after being in two other studios, the training and teachers at Classical were the most helpful to them, and that’s where they felt they improved the most. They said it was very difficult, but worth it on so many levels.

Goodness, how very strange. It seems like this is not a baseless rumor at all. I wonder if the answer I got when I called the drama department is entirely reliable. One would hope so, but…

Yeah, was under the impression that it was a done deal, and that it was for sure being phased out. But it hasn’t been announced officially to the students yet, so maybe that’s why they didn’t say that over the phone? Sometimes I think it’s students who answer… but I’ll be sure to ask my advisor when I speak to him in the next week or two :)

By the way,
According to the Fall 2010 Drama Department Course List the Classical Studio is still listed as an option for next year. It says auditions will be held in March/April.

^You mean on like Albert?

EDIT: Yeah, I just checked, and it is indeed listed. Maybe there is hope But this is very confusing to me, as it was a faculty member who confirmed this for me in the first place. I want to apologize if I was wrong and spread false info- but I’ll verify when I get back to NYC.

The guy I talked to wasn’t student-ish sounding. Maybe I should have asked for his name. I said I was inquiring on behalf of a prospective student, and he explained to me how the classical studio is not a studio for freshmen.

I asked, “So no changes are planned for the classical studio?” and he replied, “No, none at all.”

Make sure you post about whatever you learn after break, monologue!

Wow, this is all very confusing. Please do let us know because it is a deciding factor for me. I am not sure why they would phase it out because I know it is highly regarded and quite successful.

The fact that other big changes are happening at Tisch, such as with Strasberg and CAP21, makes it a little more plausible that a change such as this could be happening too.

I guess we will have to wait to find out for sure. Do you plan on attending the MLK Scholars weekend, HannahKailey?

Hmmm, my daughter, a student at NYU Tisch, said that she knows of several people who are planning to audition for Classical Studio for the next school year and none, to her knowledge, have been told by advisors that there won’t be a CS! Furthermore, I think that there has already been/or will soon be, an “advanced training options” fair, of sorts, where kids can go to learn about which studios offer advanced training, and Classical is among them.

Also, to my knowledge, the reason that there are/were changes with CAP and Strasberg is because NYU clearly wanted to bring that kind of training under the control of Tisch, rather than pay an outside studio to train NYU kids. But – and I could be wrong about this, as I am too uncaffeinated this morning to look it up! – Classical is already an NYU Tisch studio, so there would seem less reason to revamp it/change it/suspend it.

Hi –

I’m attending Classcial studio this coming year, so no, it’s not being discontinued.

What was involved in getting into this studio? How competitive is it? Is it for an entire year, a semester, is either length an option? Thanks! There is interest from my D to try for this one at a future date.

You have to audition to get into Classical Studio as your Advanced Studio. I am pretty sure it is for a full year. Auditions are held in the spring for the following year.

ccsmom, FYI:

Congratulations on being admitted to the Classical Studio, lanfordwilson. And welcome to this forum. Hope you’ll stick around and post more about your experiences at Tisch. Lots of people would be interested.
