I know quite a bit about Blair, Hill and Mercersburg. They are all wonderful schools. I am a big advocate of the MAPL schools. Mercersburg is a little remote, in my son's opinion. Blair has one of the most perfect campuses I have seen, and a new athletic facility in the works (track and football field are complete). The moral tone, from the top, at Blair is unequaled. The mentoring is awesome, and the administration and faculty are realistic and know how to deal with teens. The college counseling is great- and realistic.
Hill is outside of Philadelphia (quite a ways) and also has nice facilities.
At Blair the kids spend a lot of time with faculty outside of class- informal discussion groups at the on-campus homes, etc. To me, it is a perfect prep school experience. Blair is also a wrestling powerhouse- lots of seniors and PGs go to the top of college wrestling. They also have placed some basketball players in the NBA after college careers.

MomofWildChild I am not sure what exactlly moral tone is but I doubt it is fair to say Blair has a higher moral tone fiber ect. than Hill or Mercersburg. As you said they are all wonderful schools.

D'yer I would like to know more about bunkel scores. I see you and fun is fun have been having quite the debate over them.

I have my opinion, and in my opinion the Blair leadership (headmaster etc) is one of the truly great educators/administrators in the business. I have a lot of basis for this opinion. I am not denegrating any other school, but I know that Blair has a superstar at the top, and that matters much more than you might suspect. Also, there is a great mix of very long-term faculty combined with younger faculty.

Here is a link to Blair's upcoming open house http://www.blair.edu/Admissions/ad_open_house.shtm
If you live in nyc, they have a van service that goes to & from a bus stop for nyc. I don't know if they do this every weekend, or just the long weekends.
We are very happy with the school, and my son loves it there.

I had Blair's headmaster as my mid (10th grade) English teacher at Taft. T. Chandler Hardwick is the man! No really, he is wonderful, as is his wife Monie, who taught my "Women in Fiction" class upper mid year and was my college counselor as well. They are both fabulous - very approachable and incredibly friendly, as well as great educators. Chan's aunt lived in my hometown and Chan and Monie would come over for cocktails at my parent's house whenever they came to visit the aunt. Teacher/student relations were very close at Taft - it was truly a family environment - and I think he probably brought that to Blair from what I've heard of the school. The Director of Athletics, Jim Stone, was in my class at Taft. Anyway, if the headmaster is indicative of the school in general, Blair is bound to be a great place.

I was admitted to Blair and did not get enough aid to go but it's a great school.

what about Hill? I am considering applying to this school. Is it generous with financial aid?

My daughter transferred to Mercersburg this year as a sophomore. She absolutely loves the school!!!

The academics are top-notch. She doesn't have a favorite class because she loves all of them. The teachers are enthusiastic about the courses that they teach. The Harkness method of teaching around a table and promoting active discussion is great modality and she loves that aspect (although a number of schools do use this method). She was one of the top students at her old parochial school, but wasn't academically challenged there. At Mercersburg, she says that all of her classmates are smart and intuitive. There is no comparison between the two schools in her mind.

The school is a bit remote, but the 300 acre campus is stunning. Mercersburg held a cross-country invitational race this weekend with well over 20 schools partipating and so many visiting parents commented on the beauty of the school.

The faculty and staff make us all feel like part of their family.

I am rambling here, but sending my daughter to Mercersburg was the best academic decision for us. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Sdkddad I'm glad things are going well for your daughter at Mercersburg. Unfortunately I'm not going to make it back for Alumni Weekend this year, but I intend to go back at some point during the year. I have very similar sentiments about my Mercersburg education as well.

BTW, I'm a Mercersburg Alum from the Class of '06, and if you have any questions that don't involve the inner workings of the new Burgin Center for the Arts (sadly this actor graduated before it was officially opened), feel free to PM me as well.
