My son, a high school jr., is singing up for courses for next year. He is intersted in this new class at his school. I THINK it is called "GPS". It is making maps and detailed computer "maps" used on GPS systems. The teacher is working directly with JMU and this is worth like 6 or 9 credit at JMU. My son is very interested in this course but also thinks it might help his chances of admission.

It's probably GIS -- geographic information systems, not GPS. You collect data for GIS using GPS devices. It's a rapidly growing field, and many schools are offering certificate programs in GIS through their geography departments.

Daughter took the class in 2007 and really enjoyed it. Be aware, if you child attends another university, it is difficult to get their credit at the school. Two years later, and she's yet to receive the formal credit.
