i can’t find the info on that.

http://financialaid.ua.edu/types_of_aid_chart.pdf

thanks mom!!!

just to clarify - if not applying for need-based aid, a student does not have to fill out the FAFSA at UA - correct?

Correct. But if you want to get a work-study job, you have to fill out a FAFSA.

^hmmm, so then work-study is need based? Are most (or all) on campus jobs work study? So if DS is even considering trying to work on campus at any time he should do the FAFSA?

(obviously clueless to the whole process :))

i was told by one school that work study or a paid job are not necessarily need based but they still require the fafsa ,

Federal work study is need-based. Many campus jobs are work study because they count as both financial aid and discounted labor for UA because the federal government foots some of the bill. There are jobs that are not work study, but it takes some looking around to find a good one. One good thing is that on campus jobs are exempt from FICA.

Even if you don’t need aid, I encourage people to fill out FAFSA. Regardless of your EFC, you child will qualify for unsubsidized Staffords and should your family experience a sudden loss of income, it would be easier to get aid from UA.

You need to fill out a FAFSA to get a Stafford Loan, too.

Re…campus jobs.

Some campus jobs (I don’t know how many) are for work-study kids. However, there are jobs available for everyone.

My boys work for UA in the Center for Teaching and Learning as tutors. We’ve never filled out a FAFSA.

Also, there are part-time jobs available within walking distance of the school - such as at one of the many places on The Strip.

The school’s Rec Center also hires students who aren’t work-study.

^thanks SEA and mom2 - did not plan at all on doing the FAFSA and can’t see filling it out if not necessary. I assume it can always be done in later years if for some reason we change our mind. In theory DS will keep his current job on breaks until he is unable to due to co-op or internship.

M2CK: Can you give some more info about the tutoring jobs your sons have? I know you mentioned it before, and that there is a minimum number of credits needed before you can apply.

Are you hired to tutor a particular subject?
Thanks!

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL ) website used to say that 53 credits were needed (AP credits are fine). But, I don’t see that req’t anymore, so perhaps it’s not needed anymore.

If a student has AP credits or has at least a B (or is it B+) in a class, s/he can tutor it.

A student decides what he wants to tutor based on his stats. A student also chooses his hours of working. :)

My kids choose to tutor…math, chemistry, biology, philosophy, and Spanish.

Here’s the link… [Center for Teaching and Learning - The University of Alabama](http://www.ctl.ua.edu/default.asp)

The application link in on the right side (in red) - 7 links down

If you see a credits req’t, let me know.

Cool! Thanks for that. I’ll pass it onto my D.
