Virtuoso...what's the most recent "classical music" you listen to?
There's some really interesting music that I think you're missing out on virtusos735... Radiohead, Bjork, Aphex Twin for starters?

And by the way...the whole Mozart makes you smarter? It's a scam...there's no conclusive evidence that it makes you smarter. "Is it a coincidence that a larger percentage of "intelligent" people listen to classical music?"
I think if you replace "intelligent" with "more affluent" it would be a more apt statement. Simply put it...classical music is a historically elitist genre. I hate that. It shouldn't be, but it is.

Not all people who listen to classical music are affluent. I listen to classical music and come from a family with a very modest income. I don't have the money to go to world-class concerts though. :( Anyways, there's no real proof for the Mozart effect, but it seems like those who listen to classical music tend to do better in school.

I haven't listened to those composers (?) you listed above, as there is already TOO much to listen to in classical music. But I might give them a try.

Radiohead, Bjork, Aphex Twin...they're not classical composers. Radiohead is a band. I guess Bjork's a composer...but mostly an Icelandic vocalist. Aphex Twin is a electronica artist. I brought up their names because someone stated that they don't listen to anything BUT classical music.

John Adams, Steve Reich, Ligeti etc. ARE contemporary composers coming from the classical tradition.

Handel, Bach, Beethoven, and Vivaldi are good.

It is all I listen to as well. I like most composers, particularly Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, Shostakovich (especially the fifth symphony...), Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Mozart, Sibelius, and Chopin.

I heart Bach! If I could only listen to one composer for the rest of my life, it would be him.
I also like Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Kreisler, Vivaldi, Copland and Bartok.

Handel, Bach, Tchaikovsky are all lovely, but Rachmaninov is my personal favorite with Mahler as a second.

Absurdly complex piano is good - any recs?

Ah, Bach... (drool) I sit at home with my book of his sonatas and partitas for violin and play for extended periods of time... His music = extreme awesomeness.

No, but if it helps me with math I'd be willing to give it a shot.

Music jumped the shark after Beethoven...

/was raised listening to *Le petit m

Wagner!!!!

Ja voll. Of course.
