Do you listen to music when you study?

I listen to a lot of music when I study, especially since I'm always on my laptop. I like to listen to classical music when I really have to concentrate and do some learning, and I listen to heavy metal when I'm doing some ******** busy work.

What about you?

I can't concentrate well unless I'm listening to music. I do my homework SO much faster whilst listening to music... Unless it's a catchy 90's pop song... In which case I begin lip singing and acting like an idiot.

Yeah, I do. Why not we make a poll of this?

Yes: 3
No: 0

It distracts me. I tend to focus on the lyrics instead of the work at hand. I guess this means that I have to start looking at just plain music, but then again, I work fine without music.

Yes: 3
No: 1

^ Plain classical music will definitely help you concentrate, unless you are way into music theory.

Yeah, anything catchy (or with lyrics, actually..) and I forget I even have homework. I like listening to explosions in the sky, some nice instrumental stuff.

Yes: 4
No: 1

Hell yeah. Arcade Fire. Boring without. Right now, three Yeahs. Hardly study. Music rules.

Liist, I hate classical! :p Might have something to do with my dad making me listen to it when I was younger.

I work best when it's really quiet, usually in the wee hours of the morning when all you can hear is the buzzing in your ears. Sometimes I get up early just to work in pure, sweet silence.

No, I must have nearly total silence when I study. Background noise drives me crazy.

Yes: 4
No: 2

^ we should be roomies :D

It depends on what I'm doing. If I'm doing "busy-work" I usually listen to music, but if I'm studying, I need silence.

@BrightRed: IK! Even classical music bugs me when I'm trying to focus on a math problem or to write a paper.

YES classical music it is! Unless it's something I've done on piano, then of course I'm listening to it technically to see how they interpreted it...

And I don't listen to much while doing busy work, since I don't ever really do it except in the class before it's due :] Can't help it - I'm a compulsive procrastinator.

NO. I've tried jazz, pop, classical, opera for christsakes's, and it all distracts me.

But I need to read aloud sometimes to really get what I'm saying, so that might factor into it.

I think I adapted to listening to heavy metal to drown out my sister playing piano.

I've also invented ghetto noise-canceling headphones by putting a shooting earmuff (hearing protection) over my ear buds.

depends on the subject
if its math or anything math related, i will usually put on some catchy music. it helps pass the time and i usually do it faster
if i really have to concentrate, like reading or writing short responses/essays, i need total silence or very little background noise or else i will be very distracted

I can't do anything without music in the background. In addition to studying and doing homework, I need it when I drive, when I'm just fooling around on my computer, and when I'm trying to fall asleep.

I listen to music or have the TV on in the background when I work. I can't stand complete silence.

Yes!! Classical, like always!

Yes. Ch. 840 (Classical Masterpieces) and Ch. 841 (Light Classical). Sometimes, I listen to foreign language music so I am able to have sound in the background and concentrate simultaneously. I cannot seem to focus when English-spoken songs are playing.
