I'm talking specifically about those who got in a top 20 school. I just want to gauge if it's still possible for those to get in.

There was someone on the Yale thread, but honestly there were also a ton of people deferred/rejected even in the top 1- 5%.....

UMich ,particularly, though, took a decent # of people below top 10% that had high UW Gpa's...Look at the "decisions are in" thread

I know someone who got into Standford and who was completely average, while standford rejected my best friend with a 2380 SAT score.

I got into Duke and was in the 15% of my class. I did, however, take the most difficult courseload possible. Colleges realize that while one student's rank and gpa are higher, another student made an effort to challenge themself. Don't let your ranking/gpa shy you away from applying to a school. If you really want to go there, give it a shot. It worked out well in my case.

I got into Harvey Mudd, and my class rank percentile was something like 13-20 depending on how one calculates it. I'm also white and middle class, and don't have special health issues or what not. It definitely wasn't my grades that got me in though; mostly EC's I reckon, and to a lesser extent essays.

This info can be found at collegeboard.com
(all of these are for people that submitted rank)
For princeton - 94% top ten
Yale - 95
Harvard - 95
Stanford - 89
U of Chicago - 80
Rice - 87

Top 20% (though they don't technically rank at my former HS, a by decile breakdown is on the school profile).

NU 2011

I know two people like that. One goes to Princeton and the other Stanford.

yeah it can be unexpected, I was top 20 in my class, my SAT score 2160 and everything else great, but UMICH deferred me.

UChicago tends to look at a lot more than scores. But if you're not in the top 10%, are you at least in the top 15-20%?

Someone got into Stanford SCEA and he is not top 10%. His school is very competitive and he has high SAT.

my good friend just got into yale and she's probably in the top 50% of our class. 3.4 uw gpa and 2050 or so SATs. however, she was also a recruited athlete

A lot of people not in the top 10% get into HYP and every top 20 school. They know that those people are often victims of Unweighted Class Rank in a school full of lazy people who refuse to take AP classes, and so thus those top schools reward those people w/ lower class ranks who knowingly have risked their rank in pursuit of learning and challenging themselves.

No matter how competitive the applicant pool becomes I'm sure there always will be a decent population of people not in the top 10% at HYP and other top schools.

i was top 40-50% at a top top private and got into a top10 school, so it's possible. just unlikely unless you go to a ridiculously good high school.

I was top 45% or so.
