Anyone not on a food plan?

I'm living on campus and there's a kitchen area. I thought it would be cheaper to make meals myself and I cook all the time. Where do people typically go buy groceries?

Honestly, I’d definitely recommend against this. Once school starts up, it’s a pain in the ass to go get groceries all the time while juggling classes, homework, ECs, and a social life. But more importantly, I feel like dining halls are where a ton of socializing occurs. If you want to separate yourself from that, it’s fine, but I’m just saying that I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. I love to cook, but there will be plenty of time for that when you’ve established yourself in college and live in an apartment your soph/junior/senior year. If you choose to go that route though, the bus goes to Tops across from the mall.

I’m a junior. Thanks for letting me know. I don’t think I need to have a social life just by dining halls, there’s other things. I’ll just stock up on food. And it’s not a matter of me not wanting to have a dining plan, but the fact that I’m financially tight with money. Is there a bus that goes to wal-mart?

You can also take bus (#10, 30, 32) to commons during weekdays, and transfer to bus #15 to get to walmart or wegmans. On weekends, take 70 or 72 to commons.

The thing is, if you’re going to be consistently buying groceries, it may sometimes be a bit troublesome because of the infrequent bus service to areas with supermarkets. That tends to eat up a lot of time during the day.

I understand the point, but it is something that must be done. Thank you fri3nds04. Are there any groceries that can be bought at Cornell or collegetown? And it’s not like I’m going every week to get groceries, it’s more like every two weeks with how much I’m going to buy.

You can visit Willson Farms in college town, but things are overpriced there.

just to check: you’re not living on west campus, right? if not, then I think your cooking deal sounds like a great idea. I get the essentials for small meals from Wilson Farms in collegetown (eggs, refills of dry ingredients), but when I want to economize I head out to any of the proper grocery stores.

are you going to also use the fridge in the dorm kitchen? that might be one obstacle to stocking up, because I know that living in an apartment with 4-5 people who are stocking up for weeks of cooking can basically fill a full-sized fridge/freezer to the brim. once you get a feel for what your dorm fridge is going to be like, it might be worth looking for a used mini-fridge for your dorm to help supplement, and keep your most valuable food items safe from thieves. there are probably a lot of them used around town given the high density of transient college/grad students in this area.

I’m not on west campus. But yes, I do plan on purchasing a mini fridge. I also plan on buying my own kitchen utensils such as pots and pans so I do not have to share.
