my favorite player will always be pete sampras...

my fav player will always be pete sampras too!
i cried soooo much when he retired. it still doesn't feel the same without him, esp at wimbledon. :(

wow...texas! you have to be freaking amazing to win state in texas....you should email me some of your skills. :-)

I didn't even qualify for state. haha...but in a tournament that our state plus other states participate in, i lost first round in the championship bracket......but hey, at least i made championship, and i didn't wind up in the concellation bracket...

I loved pete... why did he have to retire??? I mean, only a year after he won the us open and he calls it quits? it's so sad.

I used to play tennis, and was fairly good, but chose volleyball instead (I know it was a stupid move, don't remind me... it's because I kept playing against a really good girl who I thought was the standard for tennis team players. I find out now that I would've been #3 on the team). my sister, who's in 7th grade, is v into tennis now, and playing in billions of usta tournaments.

astrophysicist2b

well, pete was getting older and he wasnt the same as before (as much as it jurts to say). i also saw the whole us open tournament he won and that year he did have a less challenging draw than he could've had. no doubt, though, that he played like a god and i'm glad he retired on top.

and another thing...

I CANT BELIEVE YOU CHOSE VOLLEYBALL OVER TENNIS!!!....volleyball isnt even a sport compared to the great game of tennis...j/k...good luck to your sis!

neelesh

haha...but how exactly can i "email" you some of my skills???

neelesh,
Are you really asking if anyone plays tennis on a website where the desi thread has like 20 pages? ALmost every single desi plays tennis, its the one no-contact sport that in comparison to other sports doesnt require tons of endurance. lol maybe not in sheltered Idaho, but at least here, EVERY Indian plays tennis. at Hindu Mandir Camp (yea we have one) we had religion, art, and tennis every morning. lol

*disclaimer-I'm kidding when i say Indians are athletically challenged. although it is sad that the only Indian who got a medal at the olympics was a silver in Archery...which come on we had Arjuna in the Mahabarat (sp?) its genetic....lol

I hope you're joking...tennis doesn't require endurance??? you probably don't play very competitive tennis, because i can personally tell you that at some of the usta national tournaments i've played, i've had to go through a 3 set, 3+ hours match. people that don't play tennis competitvely or at a low level just dont have the skill to be able to play agressively enough to need endurance. but if you've ever watched a pro match, especially the 5 set men's matches, you'll find out that endurance is key. all my tennis coaches (both hs and not) have stressed that the key to winning a close match is endurance. i'd say tennis consistently requires the most endurance, coordination, and athletic ability for a sport (and i've played almost every sport). its only you on the court, no team, and it consists of withstanding a long period of short sprints and movements (oxymoron?).

and as for indians playing tennis cuz its easy, thats not true in usta tournaments and the junior pro or ita circuit. i've seen plenty of indians at my usta state and national tournaments and like i said, tennis is one of, if not, the most difficult sport in...the universe. its just like any race. some black people play basketball for fun and suck, others play and are pros, and some don't play at all. you can't just say all indian people play tennis cuz they do it at some camp. i know some of my indian friends who've never played.

anyway, sorry if i seem angry or something, cuz im not. you were probably just joking. its just i play tennis in a different environment than most people, so when people say they play tennis, i always assume they mean like at the usta level, and not just for hs or fun (sorry if that sounded pompous). well, there i go telling people how tennis isn't an easy sport that requires no athletic ability...i'm going to bed...tennis kicks a.s.s....i'm out...

Yes i was joking...which is why i had the disclaimer- I thought that was evident. lol I know, that tennis requires edurance, strength and everything else. I was just making fun of Indians (and I am Indian) because I find its funny that for all the brains (to make a generalization) the athletic capablitities are a bit lacking. Yes I'm sorry you did sound angry and aggressive...yes your comment about hs tennis was pompous-but who really cares? People just need to chil out and relax, they just get offended at stupid things (I'm not refering to coqui, just in general)

for the record, I think tennis is awsome-and I know it requires endurance, skill and all the rest...

Athletic capabilities are lacking? In general, maybe, but I know some Indian dudes who have zero fat and can burn the track. No race is superior in anything, necessarily, most people have/had the potential to be great in a sport. And there are some great Indian sports players. What about Leander Paes? And Vijay Singh is the #1 golf player in the world.

sorry guy but vijay singh is fijian so he doesnt count ( hes kind of chubby too) ;)

Its not that indians are not capable, its just that we place emphasis on studies a lot mor ethan other nations.

But he's of Indian origin. And we're talking about sports, not pure athleticism. He may not be an athlete physically, but he's the best in a sport that requires a lot of skill.

OMG guys, I was kidding, making a joke... wow, i'm not saying anyone is inferior, I just made a comment i thought was amusing. Chill. I'm sorry, I officially retract my statement...k? are we good? as for Leander Paes i'm somehow related to him, i cant remember how, but i am. lol

** Vaish88, **
i'm seriously tired of your stupid comments. i really think....

ahh....who am i kidding...who says a little sarcasm isnt good for the body...

poor vaish88 is getting attacked at every angle, and it started with me. haha. my bad.

lol, i can deal with it...whatever its fine. thanks coqui, If you wana share any of your tennis skills-email it to me too. lol

i play tennis, but my team is competetive like in other aspects. so i am not in the team. my school is number 1 in state for 3 years for both boys and girls. mills godwin

Damn. Agassi is injured.

I wish I could see him win just one more Grand Slam...but he's pushing the limits of the body...

Sampras was the Michael Jordan of tennis. And unlike Federer, he was fun to watch, and he didn't win everything. The only reason Agassi ever kept up the rivalry is because he has one of the strongest fighting spirits in sports. Once Agassi leaves, I'm not going to have much of a reason to watch tennis. I just don't like anyone else. They're all brats right now. Federer is full of himself, Roddick can't change his game, Hewitt can't even get a ball past Federer, and Safin is a moody psycho.

-I play(ed) varisty tennis. #3 Jr and Sr Years.
-Junior year our team won Central Jersey Central Section and Conference.
-Senior year our team won Central Jersey Central Section but not conference. We got moved into this INSANE conference and placed second.
-Individually, I've gotten some honorable mentions and top 8 placings but nothing special.
-My school is small (150 in my class) so this was huge for us.

PS- New Jersey (especially North and Central) is INSANE with tennis.

agassi is the best player overall in the past decade. I emphasize the word " overall"

i play tennis...won a couple of high school state championships in doubles and play lots of usta...fun stuff

courtreb2005,
what state are you from?

and i do agree that agassi is one of the best "overall" players in terms of court surfaces. he is one of the 5 players who have one each grand slam on the different surfaces(french-clay, us open-hard, australian-hard, and wimbledon-grass). but agassi doenst have the best overall game. his serve and volleys arent near other players'.

pete sampras won 14 grand slams, but never the french. oh well. pete is still the best and most dominant EVER...
