Does anyone here play tennis seriously? Let's start there.

I actually just started learning this spring, from a guy who gives group lessons (most of the other kids in the group arent even in middle school). Still, I hope to play a lot the rest of the summer and learn from friends, so I can try out for tennis this fall. I’m pretty far off, but at the very least, our school’s sport teams are usually mediocre at best. Maybe if I train hard enough, I’ve got a chance? I have a really bad habit of not locking my wrist or following though, that came from badminton :(

Is there anything about tennis in particular you wanted to discuss?

State your position already op

Well, I’ve never picked up a racket, but it seems like a fun sport, so hopefully I’ll learn before next Spring and try out for teams.

Any beginner tricks? I’m still looking at rackets and shoes.

I just played tennis with some friends for the first time since like 8th grade. Pretty fun, when I can get the ball over the net but not over the fence. We don’t worry too much about the “serving box.”

I used to play in middle school in state tournaments but quit due to time issues when i entered HS (was practicing 20 hrs/week outside of school). Now, i simply play 5 hrs/week but i practice with other kids my age who are top 20 in the state and don’t care about school :P. Still, I hope I can play for whatever school (ivy is my goal) if i get into one.

Played for 5+ years now.

Competed in CIF-SS for both team/individuals with my doubles partner. lol

So I started tennis only 6 months ago and I absolutely love it. My coach already moved me up to the advanced group where everyone plays tournaments all year round and are really good (im obviously the worst one there haha). I’m starting to play really seriously, like 8 hours a day seriously. Right now I use a Wilson BLX Blade 98 with Tecnifibre Black Code 16 strung @ 58lbs, Wilson Pro Overgrip, Nike Zoom Breathe 2k10 shoes and some regular wilson bag (if you don’t know what I just said and would like to know, just ask!). The kids who go to my school said that I will make the team no doubt and I should start concentrating more on participating in tournaments and whatnot. Our team isn’t really bad, a lot of kids actually get cut each year. How about everyone else?

Wilson N6.1 95 (have three of them.)
gosen polylon @ ~50lbs
stringing machine (you know, the dropweight ones). . .

. . .oh, and adidas barricade VI’s. i go through shooes WAY TO FAST. D:

I’ve been playing for ~ a year and and a half, I consider myself to be okay, coach has said I’ve improved significantly. Usually play singles/1st dubs for school team.

I use a Prince 03 White Hybrid Hornet midplus, idc about apparel, and prince T22 shoes.

I’ve hit with some nationally ranked kids, and I do alright but tennis is a very time consuming passion. These kids like drop everything for tennis which is sorta impossible for me…

I want to play for college but most college tennis is a fairly high level-hoping to get there though! :D

I’m an avid tennis player who is rapidly improving. I’ve only been playing for 2 years, but I’m already top 6 at my school (varsity). Hopefully, I’ll crack the top three next year. I just need to keep practicing (especially my serve)!

I’m using a last-gen Babolat Pure Drive Cortex, which works for me. My parents don’t want to spend the extra money on the GT. My string is Luxilon, and I primarily use off-brand tennis shoes. I might get some Nikes soon, though.

How tall are you guys? It certainly helps to be taller (particularly with serving). I’m 5’11, approaching 6’ (I’m a rising sophomore–still have time to grow).

I’m absolutely in love with the sport and plan to play it competitively for the rest of my life.

I love tennis, I started in 7th, but went on a hiatus, and came back in 10th grade. Was in varsity in one year and I couldn’t make it this year because family wouldn’t let me due to grade issues. Hopefully once my college apps are over, I’m going to focus on getting a lot better at tennis and get into Varsity once again in my senior year :o

I’m currently using Wilson Kzen Team FX Orange, a nice tweener racquet with solid groundstrokes and nice, crisp volleys (although i suck at volleys). I want to keep playing in college, but not in a team, maybe join a club at school or a local tennis club.

I love to play! I am not the best but improving I use the cheapest racquet. I have a really strong serve but my backhand is shameful Oh I am a girl who is a rising sophomore and almost 5’ 8 I don’t think I will be growing much more oh well

Height? Think Oliver Rochus.

I was one of the shortest players when I competed in individual sectionals/CIF. D:

^Although height can be an advantage, it’s certainly not a predictor of tennis skill. My friend, for instance, is only 5’6, and he was our number one player for a time. Great things come in small packages!

heh heh heh.

As you compete in the higher echelons in tennis, there is a certain point where no amount of skill can overcome the disadvantages of your height. . . in men’s tennis, that is, imho.

Just look at the ATP: no player is shorter than 6’0". Probably the most successful “short” player is Nikolay Davydenko (who stands at 5’10"), and even then you almost never hear about him these days.

I love tennis but I don’t play
it seriously. I take tennis
lessons for one week each
summer, and occasionally I’ll play with a friend, but that’s all.

Hairy Lemon! I was JUST about to buy some gosen polylon and i wanted some insight, how do you like it? I played with it on a friends racket and i LOVED it. what gauge?

sorry, its actually polylon comfort Virginiuh.

But, still, that combined with my N95’s made for a dream combo. (It’s a 17 gauge.)

Problem is. . .I go through them like once every couple of weeks. D:

But its one of the only poly’s I love.

I tried Luxilon Big Banger’s. . . I LOVE them, then I HATE them, because they turn super dead. What a waste of money.

Multifilaments. . .I went through four sets in two days, four days, ten minutes, and two hours. The costs of multi’s just add up. .__.

I hate going through strings very fast .__.
