I am sure many in coming freshman college students would have won scholarships money towards 2007-2008 freshman year from Robert Byrd Scholarship, National Merit Finalist $2500 and Elks Foundation. My daughter has won all three. I was wondering if any of these students have received payment payable to college. We are still waiting for actual money to come to her student receivable account. Are families in similar situation that they are waiting before actual payment is released to college by these programs? The daughter is an incoming freshman at Harvard.

My S is a senior; the Byrd check came over the summer and we forwarded it to his college at that time. However, I think it's handled through the states, and each state works on its own timetable. You could contact the Higher Ed Authority in your state to check. Can't help with the other two, sorry.

She has received scholarships payment from rest of the institutions who has given outside awards. We are waiting the payments from these three institutions. I will call Higher education folks. Thanks

News from NMS

I just called NMS. On September 4th, they mailed checks for every student who has given NMS their first choice of a college where they will be matriculating.

D hasn't got the Robert Byrd yet; she sent in the verification forms that our state (NC) requires her Uni to fill out at the end of August.

Colleges usually do not sign the Byrd form until the classes start in the fall. You may want to check with the registrar or fin aid office if the form had been sent (or the Byrd office if it had been received). When they send the check to Harvard, your D should be notified to come and sign it.

National Merit takes a while as well, if I remember correctly...

First of all, congrats to you and your D.

As others have posted, each state does the Byrd. In our case the paperwork usually showed up at the end of August. The award itself, in our case went directly to the school.

Elks is kinda the same boat. With the Elks you are often dealing with volunteers and sometimes, it can take awhile. In our case, the lady who handled that for our state's elks..passed away and it was a while before they found another volunteer to take care of it.

A suggestion for all these scholarships, especially those that will cover multiple years. Create a file folder for them and record when they "hit". Over each summer review and even check in to see if the people involved (the contacts) are still there. It never hurts to send a thank you note each year to reestablish contact.

Most colleges are experienced with the scholarships you' ve been awarded. They will be pretty patient about funds. Just keep em in the loop. In our cases, we often had scholarship money showing up in Oct/Nov. The finanical aid office understood and didn't hassle us.

That depends on the school.

My D got the Byrd paperwork to sign in early July, sent it back, and the scholarship showed up in the Financial Aid Office's latest bill, dated mid-August.
I assume the Byrd people sent the check to her school.

Each state does the Byrd.

Love it. I have an image in my mind of each state dancing to its own drummer.

"That depends on the school"

"Most colleges are experienced with the scholarships "

Wouldn't that have covered it? Did I say ALL? ;)

In Indiana, the State forms for the Byrd Scholarship came in May. The award in June and the payment showed up on the student account at the school in August.

Can speak to Harvard the the NMS $$. Money was sent directly to Harvard and posted September 23 of freshman year.

In CA, the Byrd seems to go right to the school and frequently weeks after school begins. One caveat for freshman, check out your award package before these grants come through, then compare the package after the grant is factored in, most of them SHOULD NOT reduce other grant aid, but our school made an error which they then corrected at my request, but had I not printed the original package, I would not have known they changed things, as the break down is by term and already somewhat confusing- you could miss the $750 increase in student loans per term if you did not know to look for it!

We're in Illinois and my daughter is going to Stanford. Her account shows that the NM money is coming, but hasn't arrived yet. There is no sign of the Byrd money, so my daughter called and they told her they don't send it until the end of September or so.

Texas Byrd scholarships trickle in late..late September or October.
