Why do I only see deferred or accepted here? I feel like no one was rejected...............................................................................

I'm sorry. But keep in mind that unlike your friends who probably applied early to Ivies and got deferred instead of rejected, MIT actually rejects a lot of early applicants. Good luck in the regular round for other schools.

Doesn't MIT generally defer most applicants? I thought it was the other schools that have higher rates of rejection during early admissions. MIT only rejects students who they believe don't stand a chance during regular decision, right?

In my circle of friends, rates of 100% deferred from MIT and 100% rejected from Columbia have been experienced. We'll have to see what the other top schools have to say on December 15th. (Yes, I am well aware of Columbia's extenuating circumstances regarding a 125% increase in early applicants, but it still seems MIT mostly just chooses to defer students instead of reject as long as they have a chance at admissions later on.)

My nephew was deferred. He reports (per MIT site) that 11% were accepted, 11% were rejected, and 78% were deferred. He said he would have felt better about his deferral if it had been a more 'select' group!

why does MIT defer so many people? if they admit 390, and have only about 600 more spots to fill, why don't they just defer those 600 people?

Because they know that any number of things might help them realize whether or not a specific applicant is right for MIT. I think once you get past the top 100 or so of MIT admits who have many national or international awards or some extraordinary hook, there's far more than 500 people who are qualified to fill the remaining spots.

In my son's circle it's 100% deferred from MIT and 100% accepted at Columbia. I know one of the Columbia kids and he's a very strong applicant however - I was surprised he hadn't aimed higher.

Don't forget that those 600 more spots include 110 internationals....

you have to remember that they accept more than matriculate.

There are generally about 1500 students accepted at MIT each year for a freshman class of just under 1000.

Replying to the topic:
