Anyone see Avatar yet?

Heard it's visually spectacular with a regular storyline. I was going to watch it this weekend but the snowstorm ruined that plan. I really want to see it in IMAX 3D.

Any of you watch it? Which version? How was it? :)

no one? :0

saw it in 3d imax last night. insanely good. it’s hard to describe just how much better the animation is than anything you’ve seen before.

I almost saw it. The theater was sold out.

Yes go and see it - IMAX3D. Correct the theater was sold out. Time flies watching the movie.
It is quite different: It covers everything from politics, treason, wars, emotions and encountered feelings, religion, music, technology, physic, biology, DNA, evolution, math, fashion (?), spirituality, love, environment, forest, fauna, flora, deforestation, minerals, oil, employees, betray, homeless people, disability, challenges, death…visuals.

I can visualize a work or study class designed to discuss this movie and all the different aspects that are hidden or exposed in this work.

Could the situation or parties be interchanged?
Which party you find cheering to?
What plan you support and which plan you hate?
What characters are right or wrong?
Would you respect the native beliefs or would you find certain beliefs archaistic, retrograde?
…

I wasn’t going to go see this at first but if everybody likes it, maybe I should, but then again, everybody liked District 9 and I hated that movie.

^ lol… District 9… Avatar… such traitors against humanity… every last one of them.

I do want to see Avatar though. I heard the CGI makes up for the BS propaganda.

The visuals were incredibly stunning. I saw it in 3D and it was quite an impressive display of the technology. Admittedly, it’s still definitely in its infancy and has a long way to go.

The plot was fairly decent as far as they go, but it certainly didn’t buck any trends or espouse any truly impressive originality (outside of the actual avatar concept, which was cool).

My main gripe with the movie, however, was the script. For a movie with this big a budget, I would’ve hoped that they could have at least hired a decent editor for the script, or gotten someone other than Cameron to write it. There were many scenes that I simply felt were unnecessary and detracted from the story. Additionally, none of the characters really distinguished themselves outside of their cookie cutter molds. I mean, most of the script could simply have been hacked together by using excerpts from various war movies. Oh, and I know that Unobtainium actually is a term used by engineers for fictitious materials, but this just sounded hokey, and seemed like an unnecessary plot device. I mean, we’re not stupid, social commentary can be had without being obvious.

That being said, I did think that it was a nice social commentary, with lots of undertones about many of the wars that the US has fought (Afghanistan, Iraq, Native Americans, etc…). And I have to give Cameron kudos for having the creative potential to craft such an epic and intricately detailed masterpiece.

In the end, however, I have to concede that I felt a little let down by the film. It seemed to draw the audience’s eyes away from its flaws through the use of its visuals, and because of that many probably didn’t notice many of its faults. Avatar did, however, have faults. I cannot excuse the fact that much of this film’s exorbitant budget would have been salvaged if Cameron had actually edited his movie. I mean, it’s three hours long. The last action sequence lasts a good 45 minutes, and the rest of the movie is littered with excess.

If it had been tidied up, in terms of both its script and much of the film itself, through effective editing, I feel like the movie would have been much more powerful and left an impact greater than the radius of its production value. That, and if Cameron actually had injected more life into his characters, some of the lines and voiceovers were just bad, and really hokey.

This all being said, I still really enjoyed watching it. Three hours of visual shock and awe left me very impressed with how far we have come, and later when I watched a movie on VHS I cringed the entire way through. I just hope that this improvement in visuals does continue to act as a crutch for the movie industry. Movies have always been about far more than just how pretty they look, and James Cameron should know this.

Also, keep in mind that I saw this twice. Once with my friends in 3D, and then I was taken to it with my family in 2D the next day. I was far more critical in my examination of the film the second time than I was the first. Without the wonder of the visuals to once and again sweep me completely off my feet, much of the movie fell flat for me.

Again, I want to reiterate that the first time I saw it I was very impressed with the visuals, and I definitely enjoyed it both times.

So, yeah.

Avatar = a mash up of topics that we already saw already but made it into an extremely visual movie

nope budddy

What a terrible movie!

Damn I wanted to see this sooooo bad! I called up a friend and she forced me to watch New… uggh… since timing for Avatar was unavailable.

What’s better, for those who’ve already watched it, 3D or 2D?

I haven’t, but my friend nhas seen it three times in theatres already.

I saw it in reald (no imax here).

Awesome… just awesome.

heard it was bat**** crazy, epic movie, movie of the year etc etc
finally looked it up
found out it was some scifi stuffz and not based on The Avatar on Nickelodeon
felt :frowning: but then :D

I’m gonna go watch it for my bday haha, is 3d worth it?

I’m going to see it tomorrow with a group of friends… definitely going to pay attention to the script now, though.

I saw AVATAR when it came out on Friday on 2D. After the school bell rang, my friends and I jumped into my truck and we waited for the movie to start ( first showing at 3:30). It was worth all the wait! The movie was phenomenal, with stunning visuals like I never seen before. The story line was alright, I agree with others that they could have used a better writer other than Cameron. Although there were some certain messages that really got me thinking a lot. Overall, it was a really great movie, something worth seeing!

My cousin saw it on 3D and she said it was amazing. The only negative she pointed out was some of the cheesy dialogues.

It was a good movie. I didn’t see it in 3D because that was an hour later and I am inpatient (and I really don’t like 3D) Did I really miss out on something? Nevertheless, good movie.
