mwuahha gotcha. okay
30 ACT
710, 720 SAT IIs us-history & math
would u. chicago be a match with these scores?

U of C is a reach for anyone.

How pessimistic of you, idad.

I like to think of it as a match for anyone who's passionate about the school.

ahhhha now there's a refreshing answer not seen too often on CC

UChicago is really all over the place when it comes to stats. It is perhaps the least stat-regarding competitive school out there. Going on what Esquared said:

Chicago has a very self-selective applicant pool, so I think that being passionate about the school doesn't make it a match, but it is absolutely necessary. I think that most people who attend the school consider it a perfectly inelastic good. That's the best way I can describe it... its people who have seen something different in the UofC, something which they can't really find at other schools - especially big research institutions.

And again, regarding your stats, I really don't know what to say. Chicago receives only 8k applications are year, manages to accept about 40% of those, and only has a 33% yield. HOWEVER, despite all that, the entering class has a higher SAT average the half the Ivy league schools (Columbia, Brown, Cornell (whole school and just the "college", Darthmouth). The SATI average is 1420 -for last year -, that I know... with the ACT im not sure, but that's certainly published on their website.

Again, no one can evaluate stats and tell you if you'll get in. The stats of accepted people vary. Just look at the results thread for admission this year. It almost seems random who they accept and who they don't accept.

i feel like we are loosely interpreting how uchicago does their acceptances. People have been constantly saying (to some extent) "chicago doesnt care for numbers all that much and wud like to see a creative mind blah blah blah". I think that's a somewhat incorrect description. I think they care about numbers a whole lot, just like any other ivy or top college. But every once in awhile, there will be a candidate who will wow them with an essay and manage to get in. Numbers do matter a whole lot at uchicago.

"Numbers do matter a whole lot at uchicago."

I would have to agree with this statement - simply based on the fact that UChicago has No. 9 highest average SAT in the nation. Although UChicago admission officers do look a whole lot other things such as essay, ECs, "Love","passion", whatever people said... However, saying someone with 1200 SAT (CR +M) or less has a big chance to get into UChicago just by writing a "good" essay is somewhat questionable. UChicago is one of the best colleges in the nation, not just a "good essay" collector.

i showed minimal passion and avg stats (for chicago applicants, i suppose) and got in. for my big essay, i used "my own uncommon prompt" and literally copied and pasted the penn pg 217 essay and kept the same exact prompt (i worried about this a lot afterwards) and still got in. dont do that, obviously, but apply to a buncha schools and you'll get into some and hopefully it will be chicago.

my sat and act were pretty weak and that was probably what hindered me from getting accepted from most colleges.
but i turned in a supplementary submission of a musical composition i wrote, complete with program notes and stuff.
and i used my exact same essay that i used for the common app -_-. but i guess my essay was strong enough.
looking at just numbers like act and sat, it's hard to say what your chances are, though.

motpasm23: Uncommon application might scare some kids (lazybones?) away. But why don't some kids try your way of application? I mean, just simply use their common application materials to apply UChicago if they do not treat UChicago that "uncommon"? hey, you know what, a win-win result may come to reality.

I myself treated UChicago as common as any other top colleges, before, during, and after "uncommon" application. That doesn't bother me chose UChicago over other top colleges inculding ivies.

well i meant dont use the same prompt. i shoulda changed it to like..."relate a memory of whatever" which sounds weird in relation to the penn essay but yea you get the idea. but im all in favor of using essays for multiple schools. i used it for unc, too, and i shoulda used it for common app if i was smart.
