Anyone take AP Studio Art???

Know where to find sample portfolios online?

I'm doing all photography with most traditional B&W and some digital. I'm the only kid doing this(others doing 3D) and I need some guidence. The teacher is busy with other stuff and doesn't know that much about this.

Anyone?

Can someone explain what the writing portion is? Is it just to explain your artwork? I'd really like to see some examples of full portfolios but haven't found any.

Thanks

i've had the same problem. nobody knows anything about this mysterious AP. haven't found anything online either. you're allowed to do only one component of the portfolio and still get a score? if you're doing photography, are others allowed to do just 2-d drawing, or whatever? and do you have to sign up way beforehand or simply send the stuff in when the time comes. and slides, or originals?

I feel the same way.

My teacher assured me that all of my pieces of art could be photography(2D). I believe that all have to be 2D or 3D but don't have to be the same medium.

... someone has to know

i don't think they all have to be the same medium. I'm in ap next year and the spring semester of this year we start our concentration. He said it could just be one medium or be a subject with diff. mediums. Also I know that another section of the grading is called breadth which would imply that they want you to try different things. But "different things" could be interpreted in many ways

it would be very helpful if someone who's completed ap studio art posted their work online or something.....
or if those of us, anovice in particular, who are interested in taking this ap posted the work they had so far, so that veterans could offer some direction. i already have an online gallery,

feel free to look, but it hasn't been tailored to any particular course standards or anything. it's just a bunch of (mostly) portraits in pencil. if they already meet all requirements for breadth and whatever else, i'd be surprised.
somehow i thought that you had to do some 3-d, 2-d design, 2-d drawing. Being able to specialize sounds too good to be true.....
and how many are supposed to be submitted?
Do you have to register months beforehand like other AP's, or just send it in by the deadline?
All i know is that some can be submitted in slide format whereas others have to be sent in as originals.
and by the way, i never even heard about the writing portion :(
elvenqueen10, you seem a lot more knowledgeable than us....

the AP course description is just so damn unclear. if anything, this is the one AP most students would want to complete on their own, and therefore ought to be CLEARLY explained.

sorry about the bijillion postings, laughs.....my school doesn't even offer this AP...how would one go about completing it alone

i found it!

http://www.zimmerworks.com/ap.htm

at the top there are examples of student portfolios with their written commentary and so on. the billy stephens example is most informative.

If you wanted to complete on your own collegeboard.com says
" If your school does not offer an AP Studio Art program, you may work independently to complete the portfolio. It is vital that you plan far enough in advance so that you can complete the portfolio on time. See the exam calendar for information on when portfolios are due."

There are 3 sections for the 3 types of portfolio:
Breadth- 12 works on slides. only one work per slide
Concentration- 12 slides; some may be detailed studies (for example, someone did feet a couple years ago. my friend is doing figure)
Quality- 5 actual works/drawings. max size 18 X 24 ( this is part is a bit different for 3-D)
I don't know the answer to the writing portion or if you have to register to send in your portfolio. They give an exam calender but is a general ap exam calender. my suggestion would be to e-mail collegeboard or your teacher or someone who has taken the exam before.
that's all i have. there is a complete course description at collegeboard.com but if that doesn't make sense, i suggest asking your art teacher ( or another local art teacher)

thanks to ontolome for the site.

wait. just found something about the writing (not sure if it is required or not)
Written Commentary:
1) briefly describe the nature of you Concentration project
2) Briefly describe the development of your concentration and the sources of your ideas. You may refer to specific slides as examples.
3) What medium or media did you use?

if anyone wants to see my portfolio, i got a 5 on the drawing exam, just IM me and i'll do what i can

thanks a lot elvenqueen. i'm clear on the portfolio requirements now. also, to anovice, check out all of the information on apcentral.collegeboard. it's got all you need. just need to find someone to coordinate it or whatever. that's the toughest part ;) now, on to tagran.....

I just finished up all my slide work for my college portfolio, so I'm going to work on photgraphing my portfolio, all three sections, maybe even some work not included, explanations why, explanations as to the order of my slides and good orders to try, my method (I didn't have a teacher), all of my written statements of my concentration and evolution thereof and such, because I know how much it sucked trying to find all that when I was in all of your positions. I'll try to get that up after my exams.

" If your school does not offer an AP Studio Art program, you may work independently to complete the portfolio. It is vital that you plan far enough in advance so that you can complete the portfolio on time. See the exam calendar for information on when portfolios are due."

great....hope that means you don't have to register far in advance....just submit before deadline with....a check to cover the fee perhaps.

i already talked to you ontolome, but just for anyone reading this:

its not as simple as just sending your slides and some artwork

there are forms, slide cases, a portfolio, stickers go everywhere that they send to you, barcodes on everything--you HAVE to order this through your guidance counselor and you HAVE to go in on the 'testing day' for ap studio art. you MUST do this, you can't just send them a check and call it done. it doenst work like that

I'm in an actual AP studio class with a qualified teacher and all but still, there seems to be some confusion. I guess I'm just confused on how to select the photos... some portfolios have a similar theme or concentration... others have nothing in common and are kind of on their own. We have a few examples at our school from previous years(and the kids shared their scores so we have a quality gauge) but they're mostly 3D.

Thanks
