Anyone Turn Down Yale (or other comparable schools) for a lower ranked school?

well said, legendofmax, well said...

I was in almost the same situation as you. I turned down Harvard for Yale, and everybody was like: "Are you insane?!!!??? You are turning down the best school in the world for Yale??!!!??? That's so unbelievably stupid?"

But I just followed my heart, and went with the school that was the best fit. It would have been stupid, if I had done just the opposite...

My brother turned down MIT for Caltech. Of course, the fact that Caltech gave him a full merit scholarship + stipend may have had something to do with it.

If you want to talk about business school, I know a guy who turned down Harvard Business School and the Stanford Graduate School of Business for MIT-Sloan. Of course, the fact that he was admitted into the special Sloan LFM program (which is the dual MBA + Master's of Science in Engineering and also comes with a huge fellowship grant) may have had something to do with it.

MIT-Sloan is nothing to scoff at on its own, sakky.

Nor is Caltech.

someone in my school is going to Cal Berk and got into Dartmouth...

penn is #1

yes keynes...i totally agree

Wharton #1 business school? Sure, why not.

Harvard and Stanford are close behind, though.

I understand turning down Dartmouth for Berkeley. (although I wouldnt have done so)

two guys I know turned down Cornell for Berkeley. Berkeley is really a better school than most people think.

One of my friends is turning down Cornell and Berkeley for Pepperdine

Stanford is more prestigious than UPenn; so is Columbia. As for Harvard, well, most people would agree that people enjoy being at Yale far more than being at Harvard. Then again, Yale produced GWB, so...it's a give-take. I would be happy to be accepted to either.

that list of international universities had Purdue ahead of Brown...

The international rankings hold no weight in my opinion. Very questionable choices.

Yeah, but the simple but painful truth is, few people will turn down Harvard Business School for MIT-Sloan. MIT-Sloan has a lot of students who wanted to go to HBS but didn't get in, or didn't even apply because they didn't think they would get in. Even most Sloanies will admit that, overall, Sloan is probably not as good of an MBA school as HBS is.

I know one guy who goes to the Sloan MBA program...and is ****ed off that he's there. Why? Because his wife goes to HBS right now, and he obviously wanted to go to HBS too to be with her. Of course, it was never a consideration for both of them to go to Sloan. Once she got into HBS, she was going there. Nor is this an isolated incident. Plenty of Sloan MBA students look longingly across the river at where HBS is. You can't really see HBS from Sloan (too far away and lots of obstructions) but they know where HBS would be if they could see it, and would rather be there if they could.

The Sloan LFM program can and does attract a lot of people away from HBS. But Sloan by itself? Not so much.

Please that's just crazy.
