I turned down _________ for Yale

I thought of creating this thread in Yale's CC because I see similar one in other places.

My son turned down Princeton, Columbia, Caltech, Brown, Duke, Dartmouth, Cornell, and Emory(full-ride) for Yale.
Please post yours.

UPenn, Columbia, Brown, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Wesleyan, and Brandeis.

Stanford
Northwestern (BM/BS dual degree program, Murphy Scholarship)
Dartmouth
Berkeley (Regent’s Scholarship)
UCLA (Regent’s)
UCSD (Regent’s)
UCI (Regent’s)

What value is there in starting a thread like this? It just gives those who were accepted the opportunity to congratulate themselves, and it makes those who weren’t accepted feel badly. I have no problem at all with threads that draw useful comparisons among schools, but this seems pretty pointless.

^^^^ I agree. Restated, it’s a bunch of Yalies saying “Yale is better than ____”.

What schools did I turn down for Yale? Some fine institutions that I was lucky enough to be accepted. Schools that would have immensely shaped my future and allowed me an excellent education. As it were, Yale accepted me and I accepted Yale. I consider myself very fortunate.

Haha…idk…I think it gives prospective students a good chance to look at see how cross admits played out in this application season. Obviously, there are other ways to guage that as well, but idk i think its kinda useful.

RTgrove, There are other threads for that, namely the HYPSM cross-admit thread.

I completely agree with wjb and T26E4. Little value in this type of thread.

Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, UChicago, Brown

I have to agree with Rtgrove123 - I think this thread could be useful for admitted students who are still trying to decide on schools. In fact, when I was deciding on Yale vs Penn, I checked out the “I turned down _____ for Penn” thread and thought that the information was interesting/useful. Obviously I did not (in any way shape or form) make my decision based on the thread, but it was interesting to look at. Additionally, students who are still deciding (e.g. if they got of the waitlist) could PM anyone who got into both Yale and the “contending” college in order to learn about his/her process of decision, which could be quite helpful.

As a parent, I am posting this to help future students.
My intention is to help undecided students(WL acceptees) and students who are in high school in making their decisions in coming years. There is no doubt that students who got in to Yale are one of the best. I appreciate different opinions about this thread. Please post as many stats as possible.

Help them with unadorned lists of acceptances? How is this helpful? These lists say nothing about the individual students’ needs, preferences, or priorities. They’re just an excuse to boast. Except for students and families who are making decisions based purely on the prestige factor, lists like this do not help other students in any way.

Again, I have no trouble with threads that compare schools in substantive ways (like the Yale vs. Penn thread mentioned above). I object to threads like this one, which just ask kids to provide lists of schools they turned down for Yale (or whatever school). They are utterly meaningless except to provide a forum for bragging rights.

Harvard and Cornell.

In the case of Yale v. peer schools, i think this actually can be useful. I’ve known so many people who prefer Yale but feel guilty turning down Harvard. Knowing that other people have made the same choice can help you do what you want to do.

Your point is well taken, and a measure of “guilt” over turning down H was something my son experienced (momentarily). But there are lists of cross-admits all over CC, and there are plenty of discussions in which kids wrestle with the “why” of Y vs. H. It’s the “why” that’s missing from this thread. There’s just something about a thread soliciting brag lists that rubs me the wrong way.

As a counterpoint it would be fun to see which other colleges admits chose to attend instead of Yale! That would balance it out…

^ Honestly, I’d be far more interested in that than I am in this thread…

As well, as an admitted student, I can tell all prospective applicants that every single person I met at Yale was faced with a decision between one or more of the following schools: Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Dartmouth, Cornell, Penn, Columbia, Brown, and many other colleges. Knowing that one specific kid picked Yale over one of the other great options won’t help anyone in any way.

Columbia, Brown, Tufts, Boston College and Boston University…

It was a fierce struggle between Columbia and Yale, but eventually the immense undegrad focus and the residential colleges beat NY vibe.
