Better watch out, guys, if you apply to the NW neighborhood. If you get into McNutt, you could get my son for your RA. Or is HE the one I should be warning?? :)

Haha, I'm hoping to get McNutt. What's your son like? Interests, etc.

I'm starting to get away from Michigan as well, I think my GPA will be killed there. Also I don't like how they have dealt with my application so far, and how their admissions process has been. It's been stressful and I don't really want to go there. I want to get into the McNutt dorm, that's where the community is located in. Sorry I couldn't get on IM, I was at work until now, and now i'm about to turn on basketball and have some pizza.

From Parikhs:

AimHigh, according to a current student I spoke to, the president of the investment banking workshop recently sent out a >newsletter stating that wallstreet recruiters ranked kelley 3rd behind Wharton and Harvard.

That's impressive, but I couldn't find anything online to confirm that. I found this study, but it doesn't match up with what you were told:

With regard to Michigan - my son was also deferred - but was accepted to Leeds Business school at University of Colorado at Boulder, University of IA, Ohio State and Valparaiso University. He got more money from Ohio State and Valpo than he did from Indiana, but he's decided OSU is too big and Valpo is too small. Indiana has shown a lot of interest in him, and while he was more confused about whether he should go to Iowa or Indiana, after his visit this week, he's very strongly leaning toward Indiana. He loved the atmosphere and he feels it will present great opportunities by going there.

Oh, and he said the girls were beautiful. That never hurts, does it guys?

parikhs, my son is a music major who loves to snowboard, a hobby which he, sadly, cannot pursue at IU. He's a great kid, in my humble opinion. :) I think he'll make a good RA--firm, but understanding.

parikhs - About visits. I have the same feeling about Indiana. I don't need to visit, becuase i've heard so many great things about it that it would be a waste of time.

However, I still think you need to see the college. Check ou the places you'll be living. Confirm your beliefs about the school, maybe even speak to financial aid and see if they can increase your award. You need to get psyched up about going there too :)

We toured IU yesterday as part of a week-long visit to some midwest colleges, both public and private.
I'm not trying to be rude or to rain on anyone's parade, but our D was roundly disappointed by what she saw. Mostly by the dormitories.
They were old, hot (no AC, except in a few that they wouldn't show us), smelled funny and the girls' bathrooms were down the hall.
Easily, the worst dorm situation that we've encountered in 12 months of looking at colleges.
The campus itself is beautiful in some respects, filled with flowers and green spaces and the new arboretum. And I realize why the buildings are all made of Indiana limestone (cutters, etc.).
But the campus architecture is ghastly. Some of the buildings look like government buildings -- jails or courthouses, even. Only the I.M. Pei art museum showed any originality.
This is a big state school, we realize. It's going to be different from some of the private universities that we've seen.
We're not prudes and we don't live at home in luxury, but the general impression that we got from spending a full day at IU prompted my D to scratch it off her list.

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, if you base your decisions soley on the asthetics of the school, then you have it all wrong. Clearly large state schools for the most part are not even going to compare to the elite private small schools HOWEVER lets not discount the most important factor here, the EDUCATION! My brother went to IU for the Kelly School of Business after transferring from Stern because he hated it.........turns out he is beyond happy with his decision and would never have thought about basing this decision on looks alone. I do agree you have to at least like the campus no doubt but from my experiences, dorms are dorms, whether you are at Syracuse, UCLA or Harvard, with the exception of some of the older dorms having a certain "charm", they are all for the most part rather boring cold feeling boxes with bathrooms down the hall. Having visited IU, I would have to say its actually in my opinion one of the prettiest state schools I have personally seen. Best of luck to your daughter.

When I visited the school, my tour was horrible. I didn't like the guide and felt like we didn't see anything. BUT, as the last poster said, you can't judge a school based on what you saw on a tour. Of course, looks are always appealing and you have to like the way a school looks to choose it, but I think if you are looking for the school that is perfect with castles for dorms, air conditioning, gold toilets, and a butler, I wish you the best but it's gonna be a long search. And as far as the buildings looking like prisons, ......have you ever seen a prison?? What you actually toured the other day was a school that has the best music school around and a top business school around among many other things. Your opinion is your opinion and I respect it, but don't judge the book by its cover.

shoe66, I admit I have only seen videos of IU, but I admit I haven't been blown away by its beauty. I'm also not sure about Bloomington.

I have noticed that you think Colorado has a great looking campus and Ohio State has an ugly campus. Can you elaborate? How do they compare to IU? Just for my point of reference. have you visited Berkeley and Michigan? How do you like their campuses? Is your child considering Colorado?

Several of the newer dorms ARE air conditioned, such as McNutt, where my son will be an RA this coming year. He was in one of the older ones--Forest--this past year. Yes, it is a bit old and it isn't air conditioned, but his room was bigger and nicer than my other son's rooms at Stanford--and Stanford's were not air conditioned either. As for bathrooms being down the hall, yes...where else would they be? I don't know of many colleges that proved private bathrooms in the dorms.

My son visited four different colleges--his top choices after admission--and he felt IU had the prettiest campus. True he didn't visit any Ivy League colleges--perhaps they are different, but he really liked the IU campus. And after one year at IU, he LOVES the education (music, to be specific). But to each his or her own. If your daughter is not happy with IU, it is probably not the best place for her. Good luck in your search!

Clearly Indiana is not the place for her and you shouldn't waste your time visiting U of IL, either. I would direct her to one of the elite schools out east, or as you say, University of CO, Boulder.

I'm not sure what the point of your post was, but good luck.
