Hey... among my plans for this summer: writing a novel. I've written screenplays but this will be my first full novel. I was wondering if any of you wrote a full novel and I had a few questions.

How long is a novel considered? A script is usually 90-120 pages... I don't know the general guidelines for a book. Since I'll be typing on Microsoft Word I want to know how the effects book length because obviously a MW page is much larger than the page of a book.

Also, any other information on things you've written. Awards? Help with admissions? Write anything interesting? How long is your novel? Published? etc.

I've been meaning to write a novel for years, but inspiration never coincides with free time. I've been planning one over the past few months, though, and hopefully I can write it this summer.

Average novel length is around 100,000 words, I think.
Keep us updated with your progress!

By the way, I've written short stories, vignettes, poems, journals, and all kinds of short pieces...never anything over 20 pages, though, and I've never had anything published. I'm terribly lazy.

I was actually planning on doing the same thing this summer. No plans really though, I figure I'm just going to go with it and see what happens.

There are several independent publishers where you could bring your work to in order to get published. I'm sure it won't be terribly difficult - especially if you are more successful than most people predicted, then you won't have a hard time getting picked up by other publishers and such :)

I've been planning and writing a Holocaust novel for several years...I've restarted probably twenty-five times by now, using different characters, combining characters from previous plans, changing what happens to the characters, deciding who will live and who will die (which is not easy), etc. I want to work on it more this summer...(when I'm not doing my immense AP assignments...)

Although I've never written a novel myself, I recognize that that largest roadblock for me would be quantity. If you have the same problem, I'd suggest participating in NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month. Your task is to string together some 50,000 words. In one month. You'll have plenty of company.

I've heard that standard paperback book pages are about 400 words in length. Make sure to have a linked index page in Word. That should help you to stay organized. My last suggestion is to abandon your dream if it's crap. Don't take this personally, but us teenagers are not known for our literary skills. Be careful not to let ambition overwhelm common sense. If you're going for quantity, be upfront about it.
