im definitely considering, is anybody else?

Now that I've been accepted to the Honors program, and have a full tuition + $2000 + books scholarship... yess.... definitely considering.

hhhmmmnn...............look at me.............just$8000 scholarship.........but still..............i'm definitely considerin.........
why r there so few posts........

I graduated in May 2005 from UNL, and my little brother is likely to be heading to Lincoln this fall.

I was very involved during my four years at Lincoln and can answer most questions anyone might have. I was VP of the College of Arts and Sciences Student Advisory Board (student gov w/i the college), as well as a Student Ambassador for Arts & Sciences, and President of Greek Ambassadors (so I can answer questions about joining a fraternity or sorority). I was also in the Honors Program my freshman year.

Currently I'm a first year medical student at UNMC in Omaha.

I had an awesome four years at UNL and find it great that people from different parts of the country are interested in going there. What sparked your interest in UNL? (Even it was Tommy Lee, that's okay...)

were you in honors housing your freshman year bigred? everyone ive talked to suggests it but it doesnt seem as new or nice as selleck or some of the others

I actually lived in a fraternity house my freshman year (and my soph and jr...and if they would have let me, I would have stayed for my sr. year too). But I did have friends who were in the dorms their freshmen years...and I'd be lieing if I said I didn't spend a couple of nights in the dorms during my time in lincoln ;).

Neihardt isn't is as nice, but many of the rooms do have sinks in them, which I would think would be a major plus. And it is quieter than many of the other dorms. I would stay away from Selleck (I suppose you might have already filled out housing by now, ehh, maybe not)...I have my reasons, but I'll refrain from publically posting. I'll just say that I've heard more bad things about Selleck residents than other dorms.

The renovations to Harper, Schramm and Smith have really improved those halls. I almost didn't believe how nice they were when I gave a campus tour there last fall. They are definitely better than when I was an incoming frosh...

I would reccomend to everyone looking at the Greek System at Nebraska. We have one of the top greek systems in the country in whatever category you want to look at. It really is worth your time to at least try going through rush/recruitment whether youre guy or gal. I have a lot I could say about this b/c I was a member of the Greek Ambassador team at UNL and spoke specifically to HS students about the Greek System at Red Letter Days, but I'll save that until later. Even if you think "oh I could never be a frat guy/sorority girl" I really suggest you hold off until you've given it a chance. We really have a very accepting campus culture and you'll never really know if it could work for you until you try (also, living in a greek house is way cheaper than the dorms and the food's better!)

Anyways, the little brother is now for sure coming to UNL, so I'm really excited about it now (he also has enough people from his HS that he's managed to secure tickets to the USC game in '07 for my use!).

so if you had to recommend dorms for freshman year, would harper, schram, smith be listed first? then neihardt or what? also, could you pm me about selleck, i really did want to live there until you said that

See I don't know which one I would put first. I made that decision in my time on a completely different set of dorms. My little brother is pretty much going to join a fraternity no matter what, so I'm not even sure that he's going to fill out a housing contract. (Though it was interesting for me calling up my assigned roommate when that was released to tell him that I wasn't going to be his roommate...)

Each hall does have it's pros and cons:

HSS is annoying b/c of the trains that run past at all hours of the night (A girl I dated in spring of my jr. year lived in Smith). But like I said, they've done a lot in the past 2 years to make them nicer. Considering what you pay for housing, they should be nicer. But again, trains, and they are kind of far away from the "center" of campus.

Neihardt is nice, quiet, and in a great location. But the rooms are small, and of course it isn't called NERDhardt for nothing. (I would have lived there my freshman year if I hadn't rushed, so I'm allowed to make comments like that). Also, I believe that the dining hall in CPN is closed on the weekends, so you have to walk to Selleck.

Selleck has the best location, at least physically. Depending on where your room is exactly though, I'd imagine that you'd have to deal with a lot of noise outside just due to the amount of pedestrian traffic and such. Never been in the renovated dining hall, but have heard good things (except for those plates you can't microwave). I'll PM you some more.

Abel is all learning communities which are fine, but aren't as "rosy" as the University likes to make them out to be.

And Sandoz is now coed...which is just a shame. Used to house the majority of freshmen sorority members. Gosh I had some really fun times in Sandoz, but it's lost some of it's luster (plus it's like the last one scheduled for renovations).

Mobius what are going to major in?

engineering, probably chemical or biological systems

im kind of between neihardt, harper schram smith, and abel (because of the engineering learning community), i may look at fraternities, my dad is a delta tau delta alum from another school, but i think for my first year that id like to stay in the dorms. do you know anything about the engineering learning community?

Not specifically about the engineering learning community, but in general, they can be rather hit or miss from what I've heard. It's nice having people you know in your class early on, but can cause major drama and be pretty annoying to keep having to see those same people over and over again. I also know that there is a noticable lack of upper classmen interaction with the learning communities, so you kind of lose out on whatever advice they might have. You don't really have anyone to ask about which profs to avoid or anything like that.

Delt is a really great house at Nebraska - one that I have several friends in, and one of the Nebraska chapter is one of the best Delt chapters in the country. They also have a super nice housemom who is really cool. (she was director of a student ambassador program I was in) Of course, I'm sure your dad would be thrilled if you rushed Delt, but I bet that if you found another house you fit in with, that'd be great too.

If you are really set on living in the dorms the first year, almost all the houses will allow you to live in the dorms and still be a part of the chapter. It takes a little extra work just to make sure your around enough not to be labled a ghost, but is an option. (Even just having all your meals at whatever house you are in along with the required stuff would be sufficient). I do believe though however that Delt will buy a laptop for you if you rush, pledge, and sign a contract to live in the house for all four years.

The last thing I'll say is that living in a fraternity house is MUCH cheaper than living in the dorms. So that's something you might want to consider.

If you are thinking of rushing, you can submit your rush application on-line here http://www.unl.edu/greek/mensapp.html and it's FREE b/c youre a guy. ($65 for the females!)
If you fill that out, you'll probably start getting calls from fraternities in two weeks (but you can click the box that says don't contact me until after graduation if you want to wait.)

ok, i really need to get this in, so im thinking of putting in for a super double at abel, then neihardt, and then HSS. any idea on the renovation status of abel? they call it an enhanced hall, and the rest are premium halls, but i dont know the difference...

also, im definitely going to look at delt and some of the others on enrollment day, i just still have to get this app in now

I believe the enhanced status of Abel is b/c of the learning communities.

When I shacked there last January ('05) it didn't seem any different from what I remembered as a freshman. I guess they include the new loftable beds and a fridge now and that makes them enhanced.

Anyways, sounds decent. That's a very good plan for your NSE day - again, it will be beneficial if your rush app is in. They will be released to the fraternities next friday at noon (initial batch), so if you have time, try to get that done. If you don't, it's really no big deal, just so that you get it in sometime.

I'll be rooming in the business learning community. I turned down the Justin Smith Morrill Scholar community because I didn't want to live away from the city campus, esp because it's cold in Nebraska IMO. For the learning communities, are the students stronger academically than in typical housing?

not particularly - just a little bit more sure of what they want to do. (except for those in the general studies community of course ;))

Kinglin - was the Morrill community on East campus (since it's half CASNR)?

Never mind I read your other post where you explained that.

From omaha but not concidering... at all

could you tell why you're not considering if you dont mind my asking?

Probably just being in-state. That's common. Same reason why I didn't want to go to KU or K-state.

That's why I won't be attending Mizzou, here in Missouri. I look at my friends facebooks and it's the same high school kids partying together. Only now their in Columbia. However the upside is they gave me a lot of fin aid :)

Just accepted off the wait list at University of Iowa today. Now I don't know if I want to continue through with Nebraska.
