Anything about UNC

Feel free ask any questions or post thoughts, I'm an in-stater and can't wait for the decisions to come out in January.

Some negative things I've read (at studentsreview.com) are there is a difference between the in-state and out-of-state kids and htere is a quiet resentment of the out-of-staters. Is this true?

I've also read the student body is not as friendly as most colleges. How would you describe the student body?

Finally, just how hard is it to get basketball tickets?

I would say no, I live about 15 minutes from the campus and have been around the university all my life from going to bball games, football games and also concerts. Although the majority of the student body is from NC there is no resentment, everyone on campus is nice and friendly and willing to lend a hand(or at least thats the feeling I get). UNC is in the south and people down here I find are generally just laid back, so to answer your question I would say that the student body is friendly group of people. There is however quite a lot of old money at Chapel Hill, a lot of the kids are legacies or have other connections to the university but I dont think that you have the same atmosphere as say an ivy. I've had a lot of friends who have graduated in past years and a lot of my current friends who want to go to UNC, im a little bias you might say, but I think Chapel Hill is one of the best experiences and I haven't even gotten there yet.

Bball tickets...all I have to say to that is wow, the tickets are extremely hard to get if you want decent seats. Once again this comes down to the connections, a lot of the lower level seats are taken and have been taken for the past 20 years by the same families that made huge donations when the Dean Dome was built. My dad is an anestheisiologist and has friends who are professors at unc, thats how I got my tickets. As a student however there are two systems, one uses a point system in which for ever sporting event u attend you receive points(field hockey, soccer, baseball), the second system is more traditional, you receive a band with a number and they draw out numbers and hope that your number comes up.

Just a quick question, do you know anything about the stats of out of staters? Like, people who have below a 1400?

How is the surrounding city? I've never been to the south, and wondered what the "feel" to both the city and the university were

I cant really speak to the out-of-staters stats, i'm pretty sure they dont publish that info but i know that generally out-of-staters have high SAt/ACT scores but really they always stress the importance of having a hook. So if you have something that really makes you stand out i think you have a pretty good chance.

Chapel Hill/Raleigh/Durham make up the triangle area. Chapel Hill is basically a college town, however there are lots of other things to do such as clubs and resturants. Research Triangle Park(RTP) i think they say has the highest concentration of phd's in the country so there is a lot of big buisness in the surrounding area. Duke and NC State also neighbor UNC and there is always lots to do on all of the campuses. The towns definately have that college feel, Raleigh is growing, but if you are from the northeast it will be a big change. The good thing is that winter lasts about 2-2 1/2 months here and generally the weather is beautiful. Last week we were in the 70's for almost the entire week.

ah..70's. Beats the below 0 windchill we have now in Chicago

haha, i love how the expert on carolina is someone who doesn't even attend.

And it helps if the hook is something like being a celebrity or athlete..my D. had an art hook ..thats not what they want!

BTW tarheelhopeful I am sure knows lots about the school just from living there..unccadeto8..
We learned a ton when my D. applied and got deferred about what it takes to get in from examining stats , talking to others and to admissions.

Anyway she is thrilled where she is and it worked out for the best.

i'm not saying i know everything bc like i said i dont go there, but i have spent a lot and when i say a lot i mean a lot of time over there and have lived in the area all of my life.

no no, don't get me wrong, having someone on the UNC part of this forum is better than having no one to answer questions. Even though most are those dumb "what are my chances" questions. I hope u guys get in, i know u'll love being students at carolina, i know i do.
