Anything I can do as a junior?

Hey everyone!

As a junior, I’m already thinking about colleges, and I’ve been in love with Barnard for the past year. Unless things change dramatically, I will apply early decision come October.

However, my grade point average is not absolutely stellar and I don’t play any sports. I think that I will not be very competitive on paper.

Is there anything I can do this year that will increase my chances? Maybe, talking to admissions, or perhaps doing something for a professor- along those lines?

Hee. This post reminds me of when I was a junior, which was actually not that long ago when you think about it...

My GPA wasn't exactly the greatest thing in the world, either, and I don't play any sports. (Trust me, you wouldn't want me on your soccer team because I'd probably kick the ball into the wrong goal.) Afraid that my application would pale in comparison to other applicants, I decided to pay a couple of visits to the school - a campus tour, or an interview, in which you can inquire about a certain professor or certain class. Showing interest is very important, and this goes for most (if not, all) colleges.

Good luck!

Hey, did you do this during your junior year?

If so, what kind of questions would I ask during the interview? Would I still be able to have an interview senior year?

thanks :)

I did all the visiting the summer before senior year, and I had the interview this past September. I believe you can still have your interview as a senior, so long as it's not past a certain date. Early Decision applicants can't request an interview after Nov. 1, and Regular Decision applicants can't request one after Dec. 1. (I'm not sure about this, though. Let me double check the application instructions.)

As for the questions...well, I'm pretty sure just about any question will do, so long as it doesn't have an answer that is easily found on the website or in the viewbook. For me, I asked about the psychology department at the College, and the assistantships that are offered for psych majors. There was also something about the food plan, which may seem a little trivial, but my stomach is very important to me. :)
