My son submitted his application to Clemson on August 1st and transcripts, etc. were confirmed received in early September. He wants to study mechanical engineering.
Stats:
3.89 GPA
ACT 34
Excellent ECs, including involvement in varsity athletics, service organizations and student government including leadership positions in all these sports/organizations
From Texas

It seems he has a strong application, but given what I have read here recently, I am surprised he has not heard anything yet. He has had several acceptances so far, but Clemson is one of his top picks.

What is your son’s class rank? I know that is sometimes important in terms of scholarships. Nevertheless, he should get in. If you are looking for some money from Clemson, hopefully you will hear by the end of the year/January because that’s when major scholarships get handed out. There is still time though.

@ DPMdad - You might call and ask (never hurts). My daughter has similar stats as your son and she sent her app in the beg. of Sept. and she received her acceptance about 2 weeks ago, also for engineering and also out of state. I’m not sure if this matters re: the order in which they review the apps but she sent her test scores in June- when she took the tests, and they sent her a provisional acceptance shortly after based on her test scores they gave her a reference number to include in the app. Maybe they review those provisional ones first??

@ pierre0913 - When you stated that ‘major scholarships’ go out end of year/January, does that mean separate from what the admissions sends out with the acceptance letters? (i.e. major = engineering-specific scholarship)? If so, is that a separate application or automatic consideration?

coleman4, no those will be sent with acceptance letters. You are automatically considered for those merit-based scholarships once you apply to Clemson. If you do receive one of the larger merit-based scholarships Clemson offers, you will most likely know in advance of February 15 if you applied early. If not, it’s still possible to get money with your admission notice on February 15th but I wouldn’t expect a lot.

@ pierre0913 - daughter already got acceptance letter with a merit scholarship so I guess I’m wondering if there are department scholarships that could go out too- or is the scholarship they sent most likely ‘everything’? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good scholarship but still not in the ballpark of close to in state tuition and with 2 kids in college at the same time, this is a factor. Son goes to USC on a merit scholarship that brings him down to in state tuition which helps but either way, 2 kids in college is expensive :(

Yep, not the first time that I’ve heard this story. You can get more money down the road from Clemson but don’t expect anything significant. It just comes down to the fact that USC and Clemson have different approaches when it comes to giving out financial aid/scholarship money and for many people USC will be the more affordable option.

Thanks for the replies. My son’s school does not rank. Maybe that has something to do with it… Perhaps we may give them a call. I do remember him getting some kind of letter following his last ACT scores that gave some kind of code to have the application fee waived…

My son received his acceptance from Clemson today with a $10k per year scholarship. I have to say that I’m a little disappointed as I was hoping he might get the 15K per year amount. I guess his school not ranking students made the decision a little more uncertain. Clemson has been his second choice school. We have yet to receive a scholarship number from his first choice but my worst case prediction would end up making net costs essentially equal. We’ll see what happens

^ DPMdad - Daughter received the same scholarship and our school ranks. They most likely give fewer of the 15k scholarships since it appears those are the maximum from what I can tell reading their website. I too was hoping for the 15k as that would bring it closer to in-state and with 2 in college at the same time- and both attending out of state schools, we need all the help we can get! Clemson is a top contender for my daughter not sure which of where she applied is her “first choice” - she goes back and forth on that one.

Sorry to hear about that DPMdad - I definitely want people to attend Clemson but with the whole college admissions process, it’s a lot better to make a decision that is best for your son and family financially.

pierre0913,
I agree. Fortunately, we will be able to swing the finances at this point, so in the end, it will be our son’s choice. We visited ten schools last year and my son decided to apply to six of them. So far, he has five acceptances and is still waiting on a response from the last one. We have done a few exercises in examining pros and cons of the various universities focusing on factors like size, location, academics, class sizes, career services, Catholic community, school spirit (can any school really compare to Clemson here) and the intangible “fit” and Clemson clearly ranked a close second when these and other factors were considered. He is fortunate to have choices. I want to thank all the supportive people on this board that help to make navigating through this information a little easier.

Pierre0913, Your helpfulness is much appreciated and it mirrors the helpfulness, kindness and enthusiasm that we have consistently encountered with EVERY member of the Clemson community. I must admit, that if my son does not chose to attend Clemson, part of me will be sad that we will miss out on being part of the Clemson family.

coleman4:
Thank you for your response as well. Our son will be the first in college for us but his younger sister will be just 3 years behind. So sooner or later, I will be feeling your pain, too. Best of luck to your daughter!

I too wondered if we need to be concerned with our daughter seeing that many are getting acceptance letters already. She sent hers in October, we visited just before Thanksgving and it is absolutely her #1 choice. From Indiana, applied to Engineering, 4.3 weighted/3.9 unw; AP classes and working toward IB diploma, varsity soccer 4 years + captain, many other school/volunteer activities (NHS etc), Project Lead the Way since 7th grade (engineering curriculum); ranked top 3% (24/620); only downfall is SAT not as high as she would prefer - sent in 1210 (but still in mid 50% as listed by Clemsonn) and awaiting new scores next week. Hoping for some scholarships, but afraid test scores won’t cut it.

Thanks. Would that change if these most recent scores get to 1250? they said they accept scores for merit scholarships through December 31. (she gets the scores next Monday on the 23rd and we are all set to pay to have them rush delivered if they have gone up).

My son, class of 2015, loved Clemson. Have to reiterate, if their community is anything like the supportive environment of this thread, I can only hope he gets in.

Newmexikid, I can assure you that it is I didn’t care about the school at all until I visited in April of senior year and I fell in love with the atmosphere. It’s a big school but it feels so much smaller–the term “Clemson family” is used a lot.

I applied to Clemson at the end of September and got my acceptance at the end of January. I’m out of state so I got $5K in merit scholarships with my acceptance and got another $5,500 in out of state grants once the financial aid stuff came out. I wish everyone the best of luck and just visit the school. It makes all the difference!
