Hi everyone,
I’m considering taking some AP classes along with Dual Enrollment and would appreciate some advice/input. Does anyone have experience with this? Was it super hard? I do online school and have good time management skills so homework and assignment time won’t be a huge problem most days. What I want to take is:
- AP Bio (I don't think this one will be ~too~ hard, but I have to take it for a lab science)
- AP Lit (This one will be super easy for me, good teacher+I'm good at Lit.)
- AP Cal (This will probably be the hardest and I might swap it for AP Stat.)
- DE German (Currently in my third year of HS German)
- DE Chem (Iffy about this one)
- Honors World History (to help me study for the AP World His. exam that my school doesn't offer).
Looks pretty solid. If you’re on top of your work you’ll be fine.
This is a tough schedule. Do you have reason to believe that you can get nearly all A’s with this schedule, and do you already have experience with multiple AP classes? I don’t think that universities are all that impressed with a student that takes too hard a schedule and ends up with B’s and C’s (we see a few posts on CC from students in this situation). However, clearly different students will have very different results with a schedule this demanding and I don’t know how you have been doing up to now.
Also remember that senior year of high school you have a defacto additional “class” which consists of researching universities, visiting universities, deciding which ones to apply to, applying, visiting your favorites again, and picking where you are going to go. SAT or ACT classes and preparation also is an “additional task” unless you have already done this and are happy with your scores.
In our experience, AP Biology was the hardest AP my kids ever took, but that may vary by school/teacher. I’d be iffy on taking that and a college-level Chem class, myself, but I’m not a super-science-y person. Are the DE classes one per semester? (So, Chem one semester, German the other?) I think if you feel confident you may be able to manage it all, but that is a pretty heavy senior year schedule, for sure.
I’d chose AP Calc over DE Chem, especially if you already have a high school chem class.
I would not take two lab sciences at the same time…esp with the travel of DE in addition.
Whatever grade you get in DE Chem would stay in your college GPA.
I would really drop the DE Chem
