AP art history artists

Hi everyone! I'm currently self-studying for the AP Art History exam using Gardner, Stokstad, and the Annotated Mona Lisa. I really love the subject and find it completely fascinating.

The problem I'm encountering is that Gardner and Stokstad are, like, Tolstoy long. And the Annotated Mona Lisa oversimplifies outrageously (Ex: doesn't cover Islamic art) and seems to be only good for an overall review. So at this point I have no idea how much information I'm supposed to know and am generally very confused and overwhelmed.

I read in a thread back that for the art history exam, it's basically important to familiarize oneself with trends and a few of the main artists of each time period. The poster also said to ask one's teacher for a list of artists, but I obviously have no teacher. So, if anyone would be so kind as to consolidate a list of the most important artists for the exam, I'd really, completely, utterly appreciate it.

Oh, and if anyone has any released or practice tests for art history besides the one already on Collegeboard, I'd appreciate that too! Thank you all so much!

hope this helps you. just bought a book from REA publishers on ap art history (just google the company). authors' students have had #1 results for three years. just received it. it gets to point, has practic tests and CD with pics.

The only time artists are ever really "known" is from Renaissance onwards, so I'm just going to really study those and their techniques for the exam.

Renaissance - Giotto, Bosch, Bruegel, Jan van Eyck, van der Goes, Durer, Fra Angelico, Donatello, Boticelli, Massaccio, della Francesca.

Baroque - Rembrandt, Vermeer, Rubens, Caravaggio, Leyster, Artemesia Gentileschi, Velazquez, El Greco

19th Century - Ingres, Goya, Gericault, Fragonard, Watteau, Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh

20th Century - O'Keefe, Matisse, Picasso, Pollock, Theodora Lange, Alexander Calder.

We should also be studying famous architects, but I have NO clue about any of those.

Thank you both very much!

gtoracer- I ordered the REA book and it looks pretty accessible and interesting. Thanks for the tip!

iismepeter- Ooh great list, thanks. I think Watteau belongs under Baroque/ Rococo, though, not 19th Century. And yeah architects are hard for me too. I only remember/recognize Gaudi well because his buildings looked really trippy.

I know NOTHING about architects. I know I.M. Pei designed the Glass Pyramid at the Louvre and that's about it.

Also, the 20th century list isn't all the artists since I don't know much about it. Is there a lot of 20th century stuff on the AP?
